Chateau Gloria Saint-Julien 2021 (En Primeur - arrival 2024)
Chateau Gloria
Found in the Saint-Julien appellation, this relatively young estate was founded and assembled by Henri Martin in 1939. Martin established both the initial estate (6 hectares and 6,000 vines) however also continued to add new land bought from surrounding classed estates. Indeed, this was quite a feat considering that Saint-Julien has only 900 hectares of vines, consisting almost entirely of land belonging to the appellation's eleven great growths.
Not only did this result in the estate it is known as today, a comfortable 50 hectares, Martin also built the sterling reputation of Chateau Gloria within the space of a single generation. Planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot this estate is a true (young) legend of the Bordeaux region.
Today, Francoise (Henri’s daughter) and Jean-Louis Triaud (his son-in-law), assisted by their children, Vanessa and Jean, continue the family tradition with passion.

A generous and showy Saint-Julien, the nose bursting with juicy red berries, cassis, cherries, blackcurrants, and a fresh mint. The palate is broad and juicy with a bright, vibrant acidity, that really makes the flavours jump out. Flavours of dark and red berries, some crushed stone and some herbaceous notes. Hard not to enjoy this wine, simply masterfully crafted.

Charming and extroverted, the 2021 Gloria bursts with aromas of cassis, cherries, sweet berries, fresh mint and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's a lively, seamless wine that wears its heart on its sleeve. This blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 14% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc seems likely to emerge as a sleeper of the vintage. Tasted four times.

A darkly herbal nose, blackcurrant and brambles. Juicy and alive on the palate, this is quite high-toned with a sharpness to the fruit yet also a pencil lead-chalkiness giving this push pull of brightness as well as a savoury touch. I like the clarity of flavours, the precision that comes across - it's playful and fun and all seems in balance with the minerality showing through on the palate too. A little light on the mid palate, but easy to like.
