Gold medal, 2019 Halliday Australian Cabernet Challenge 2017 was a terrific vintage in the Yarra Valley. Sandra de Pury was so smitten with the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon that, for the first time since she took over from father Guill, she decided to bottle a varietal version. The original Yeringberg Cabernets - the famed blend of the five key Bordeaux red grapes - is sacrosanct. There was no question of compromising that wine. Hence it carries the perfect balance of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit, including the property's oldest plantings. But for this special bottling of straight Cabernet Sauvignon, Sandra solely took fruit from the 1999 plantings. “A wonderful counterpoint to our red blend, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a darker, more powerful and vital style, which nonetheless retains the Yeringberg hallmark of elegance and balance,” she says. This wine was made to commemorate the 650th anniversary of the de Pury family in Switzerland in June 2020. Alas the celebrations were called off, but Sandra's extended family members received this beauty as a gift. A small amount was set aside so that Yeringberg’s many fans here in Australia can have a taste of another slice of Yarra Valley history.

Deep red colour with a bright tint of purple and a bouquet of smoky, cedary cigar box and dried flowers and dried herbs. Raspberry, too. The wine is bright and intense, elegantly shaped and proportioned, with balance and early drinkability yet also undoubted ageing potential. Refreshing acidity in the finish and aftertaste. A wonderful wine, already showing lots of detail and fascination, and this will only increase with time.

Beautiful perfume of dried flowers, sweet tobacco and spice, blackcurrant and redcurrant, even almond meal. Dense and dark, with a smattering of dried herb, ripe cherry, crisp acidity, firm grainy tannin, and a distinctly ‘mineral’ and savoury finish of exemplary length. It’s a textbook example of superb Yarra Valley Cabernet.
