Yangarra Old Vine Grenache 2019
Yangarra Estate

Their Ironheart Shiraz is as good as any McLaren Vale Shiraz you'll come across and their minute production (think 160 cases only) of the High Sands Grenache is a remarkable rendition of old, old vine grenache. Their portfolio is incredibly strong from their entry levels through to the icons. If you haven't yet been introduced to their wines, you're in for a very nice surprise.
Congratulations to Peter Fraser who was named Winemaker of the Year in the 2016 Wine Companion!

From bush vines planted in 1946 high on the Estate’s deep sandy soils, the Old Vine Grenache is complex, perfumed and elegant with a trademark tannin structure. Pretty floral aromas and briary bright red fruits. The palate shows lots of bright cherry fruit, and the vineyard’s typical fine line of sandy mineral tannins and acidity.
Peter Fraser was named 2016 Winemaker of the Year by James Halliday, and is a pioneer in Organics and Biodynamics in McLaren Vale.

The vines were planted in 1946. The wine is a steal in 2020.
Beautiful fragrance, fruit and structure. It’s light but insistent; it has presence. I guess you’d say that it tastes of redcurrant and plum, gently stewed versions thereof, though saltbush and sweet spice notes gather in number, and there’s an earthen aspect, a suggestion that it’s of the ground. Tannin here; it means business. It doesn’t just sit there; the tannin here takes those fruit and spice notes and brands the finish with where it comes from. $35, in any walk of life, rarely offers that kind of connection; that kind of more.
