75% Shiraz, 25% Mataro. A lifted and expressive nose full of boysenberry and blackcurrant fruit framed by floral notes, wild herbs and spice. The palate is opulent and mouth-filling with a core of supple blue fruits, blood plums and exotic undergrowth notes given definition and tension by whole bunch influences and bright acidity. The Shiraz is sourced from two established (twenty five and forty year old) and low-yielding vineyards in the Light-Pass sub-district on the eastern sloped of the Barossa Valley. The Mataro is sourced from the eighty year-old, dry grown Marschall Vineyard in the Vine Vale sub-district. The 2016 vintage was outstanding, possibly the most conventionally perfect in the Barossa Valley in a decade – despite a number of hot contenders. Excellent, balanced and consistent conditions – warm but not too warm, dry but not too dry, crucially cool Autumn nights – have led to intensely flavoured and brilliantly balanced fruit with excellent freshness.

It’s Shiraz and Mataro, and ever with W-C, it’s both good value and good drinking. You’re certainly not getting short-changed on flavour here. It’s rich, dense and very ‘purple’ tasting, with meaty dark fruits, a sort of lavender/thyme perfume, and perhaps a bit of spice. It spreads thickly though the mouth, with an almost syrup-like intensity, but meat and spice, along with fleshy tannin powdery pulls it back into line. The finish is good, and there’s an attractive perfume lingering as you swallow. Succulent and satisfying.

Hand-picked, cool ferment, 15% whole bunches kept separate, matured in large-format oak, made at Sons of Eden. A powerful wine with flavour and textural complexity; black fruits, spice and licorice.
