A blend of 86% Shiraz and 14% Bonvedro. Fruit is sourced from a 60 year old vineyard in the Light Pass sub district of the Barossa Valley, a 55 year old Eden Valley vineyard and Bonvedro from the 75 year old John’s Vineyard. Bottled without fining and with minimal filtration. The nose is dark and brooding, offering glimpses of dark berry fruit, exotic spice and wild forest floor. The wine flows across the palate with a dense inky intensity and supple mouth-coating texture. Flavours of dark berries, licorice and blood plums evolve to exotic spice and hints of wild herb on an expansive back palate courtesy of the Bonvedro. The finish is impressively detailed and defined by stalky whole bunch complexity and a fresh finish.

I generally like a little something extra in with my Shiraz, so long as it’s not Viognier. Bonvedro is a good sounding grape name. This is rich and tasty, but not overdone. Black fruit, spice, sage and mint, pleasant sort of meatiness. Medium to full bodied, all boysenberry and spice, a black olive tapanade flavour, gentle grip of fine grained, but dense tannin, excellent length. Offers an extra dimension of interest, and also, great to drink. Bargain.

Includes a splash of bonvedro from Woods Crampton's two oldest vineyards, a 20% whole bunch component kept separate until blending and bottling. This is unequivocally full-bodied, and stands out from the elegant mould most of the reds of Southeast Australia achieved in '17 with seeming ease. It has to be respected, especially for those looking for wines with a minimum development of 10 years
