Editors notes

This is a blend of a single Barossa Valley vineyard and a single Eden Valley vineyard on either side of Mengler Hill. The Eden Valley portion is a low-yielding and dry grown vineyard located near Cranford not far from the Eden Valley township in southern Eden Valley.

The wine was not fined, given the loosest possible filtration and minimal sulphur before bottling. Mengler’s Shiraz is a rich but balanced style that shows off the best of the Barossa and Eden Valley, you could sum it up by saying power and poise. More in the medium bodied mould, the palate is supple and elegantly fruited, with dark berry, and seductive Eden Valley spice complemented by silky tannins, subtle oak before a long and bright finish. Drinking well now this has an assured and long life ahead of it so will cellar comfortably for the next five years. Drink with a chargrilled steak or a selection of hard cheeses with lavash.

    95
"(2018 vintage) A selection across two vineyards on either side of Mengler Hill, pruned to abstemious yields, hand-picked and plunged resplendent with 15% whole-bunch, before maturation in French oak (25% new) for 12 months. The result is a more intense expression than its brethren, boasting a vinous drive of mocha, coffee bean and bitter chocolate melded with the assorted dark berry fruits, across the palate. Long and sumptuous. Compelling length. I prefer the juiciness of the regular Barossa wine, but this wins based on its intrinsic qualitative makeup: tenacity and intensity of flavour."

Locations

Australia

Australia's wine industry is a thriving part of the country's economy, contributing significantly to employment, production, export, and tourism. In fact, the industry is the fourth-largest wine exporter in the world, shipping out 760 million liters of wine to countries including France, Italy, Spain, and the UK. One of the key factors contributing to Australia's success as a "New World" wine producer is the formal export and marketing of its wines through Wine Australia.

Australia's wine regions are scattered across the south and southeast, with almost every state boasting its own vineyards. Victoria, for example, is home to an impressive 21 wine regions. Some of the most famous wine regions in Australia include Margaret River, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley, and local regions to New South Wales such as Cowra, Southern Highlands, and Mudgee.

Australian winemakers are known for producing a diverse range of grape varieties, with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir being among the most popular. They tend to focus on producing wines that are ripe, fruit-forward, and easy to drink, using modern winemaking techniques and equipment such as stainless steel tanks and temperature-controlled fermentation.

With its bold, fruit-driven flavors and reputation for quality and diversity, Australian wine has become a popular choice for wine lovers around the world. And with such a broad range of wine regions and grape varieties, there's something for every palate to enjoy.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the country's vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.

Multi Regional

Multi-regional wines are wines that are made using grapes from multiple regions or even countries. These wines are often blended together to create a unique flavor profile that may be difficult to achieve using grapes from a single region.

Multi-regional wines can be blended from different grape varieties or different vintages.

Multi-regional wines can also be blended from different countries as well. For example, a wine that combines grapes from Napa Valley, California, and Barossa Valley, Australia, would be multi-regional wine.

Multi-regional wines can offer a unique and complex flavor profile, as well as being a way for winemakers to create a wine that is greater than the sum of its parts.

About the brand Woods Crampton

Woods Crampton was established in 2010 by label designer Aaron Woods and marketer Nicholas Crampton. They have created a range of wines from the Barossa and Eden Valley covering five varieties and various styles.

Their ambition is to produce unforced wines that flaunt the quality of their fruit and represent their vineyards. Winemaking with minimal interference is followed by creating elegant and expressive wines.

This is one of Nicholas Crampton’s exciting new ventures with his winemaking friend Aaron Woods. They both make the wines at the Sons of Eden winery with additional advice from Igor Kucic. Production has rocketed from 1500 to 5500 dozen as a result of the wine quality and the attractive prices, and they are confident of continued success in the future.
