White Wine, Orvieto

Orvieto is located in Umbria and Lazio, around the commune of Orvieto along the western coast of Italy. From a wine growing perspective, it's most well known for its white wines made from a variety of blends, most commonly Grechetto and Trebbiano though often include Malvasia, Drupeggio, Verdello and Canaiolo bianco to complete the blend.

The white wines are labelled as DOC Orvieto or DOC Orvieto Classico depending on the quality. The region's limestone tufa and volcanic soil makes expressive, complex wines with a distinct minerality, and oft a saline quality to them. Red wines are also made in Orvieto and can be labelled as IGT or DOC. To carry the DOC label, the red wines must contain 70% of a selection of varietals (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Pinot Nero, Aleatico and Sangiovese.) Some wineries are experimenting with non-traditional blends and opt instead to use the generic IGT classification.
