The second wine from Vieux Chateau Certan, one of my favourite estates in Pomerol. In this case, it’s a selection from younger vines, and in 2012, a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Importer: United Cellars Dusty herbal perfume and tobacco, volcanic rock, blackcurrant and raspberry, some mocha and pepper. Savoury and dry, feels a bit dusty and gravelly, but has ripeness and intensity: I’m thinking frozen small berries like redcurrant and blackcurrant, with a pomegranate tang. Good finish: sure, long and firm. Has a certain wild energy, precision and charisma that makes it so appealing, and it’s just so good to drink.

This is so delicious already with dried strawberry, chocolate and walnut character. Full body, fine tannins and a silky and delicately fruit finish. Fantastic for the vintage. Sweet fruit. Drink or hold. But why wait? Second wine of Vieux Chateau Certan.
