Vergisson is home to a number of excellent, limestone-rich vineyards and this idyllic, high-altitude site, on the softer incline of the rock, is one of her finest. Aside from its ability to make stunning Chardonnay with more cut than Sweeney Todd, this is simply one of those vineyards that is so visually striking, you can just tell, from sight, that it makes outstanding wine. This comes from 70-year-old vines rooted in some of the rockiest, most mineral soils of the region. Guffens blends three parcels in this same vineyard, covering both northerly and southerly exposures. Low yields and small bunches come as standard. This was raised in barrel (25% new, for seven months) followed by a winter in concrete to bring the wine together. Again this is incredibly mineral yet the nose is much more open with lifted grapefruit and smoky notes leading to a wonderfully complex and layered palate which offers terrific balance of fruit (ripe stone fruit, white flowers, grapefruit pith, etc.), gentle nuttiness and a lick of earthy, rocky minerality. A long, fine, powdery close to finish. Superb.

The 2017 Mâcon-Vergisson La Roche wafts from the glass with notes of preserved citrus, nutmeg and yellow orchard fruit. On the palate, it's full-bodied, satiny and ample, with plenty of volume and dimension on the attack, beautifully balanced by tangy, incisive acids that lend lift to the chalky finish. This is well worth seeking out and would make a terrific daily drinker.
