VALLI is the personal vocation of pioneering winemaker Grant Taylor. Grant’s name is synonymous with Otago Pinot Noir. He has been crafting wines there since 1993 when there were only 20 ha planted – today there are over 2000. Grant founded VALLI in 1998 with the intention to produce single vineyard Pinot Noirs highlighting the different characteristics of Otago’s sub regions. More than 20 years later, VALLI is doing just that, producing single-vineyard pinot noirs from Gibbston, Bannockburn, and Bendigo in Central Otago and the Waitaki Valley in North Otago, as well as a dry Pinot Gris from Gibbston and a Riesling from Waitaki. In 2015, established Otago winemaker Jen Parr joined Grant in the winery where the two aim to create wines with honesty, integrity, and most of all, a sense of place. When you drink a Valli wine, you are enjoying more than just a wine: you are experiencing a place.

Dense, ripe pinot noir with plum, liquorice, anise, spice and wood smoke flavours. Very typical Bendigo flavour profile, but with a better texture than many. Will certainly benefit from bottle age but offers good drinking now.

Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with slight black and purple hues. The nose is well-proportioned with tight and densely packed aromas of black berried and dark-red berry fruit, along with notes of liquorice, savoury herb and whole bunch stalk elements, iron-earth and black minerals. The nose is reserved and brooding. Medium-full bodied, the palate is full and concentrated with powerful and deep flavours of dark-red and black berried fruits entwined with liquorice, dark herbs, earth and black mineral nuances. The fruit is encased by significant tannin structure, the textures fine and flowery. The extraction grows in prominence, lending considerable mouthfeel and presence. Integrated acidity underlines the palate, and the flavours show restraint on the long, concentrated finish which reveals iron-earth and mineral nuances. This is a powerfully concentrated, brooding, black-fruited Pinot Noir with liquorice and mineral notes, and plenty of structure and grip. Match with game meat and casseroles, and hard cheeses. It will develop over the next 7-9+ years.

The 2014 Bendigo Vineyard Pinot Noir has a medium ruby-purple color and opulent nose of black cherries, mulberries and spiced blackberries with hints of violets and stewed tea. Medium-bodied, it fills the palate with lively black fruit, spice and earthy flavors with a solid foundation of grainy tannins and finishing long. It should cellar well over the next 5-8 years.
