Founded in 1998, Valenciso may lack the long, storied history of some of the other wineries in the Rioja, but it's certainly gaining ground quickly.
In a remarkably short time, Luis Valentin and his partner Carmen Enciso have established a reputation for excellence.
Valenciso has is seen by many as the gold standard of Tempranillo in the area. Only making two wines - their famous Rioja Reserva, and a tiny amount of a Viura/Garnacha Blanca blend - their focus is on coaxing flavours from the Tempranillo grape. The poor quality limestone and clay soil is perfect for a low yield crop, which is treated with absolute care and precision to create some of the region's finest wine.
