Tyrrell'S Stevens Shiraz 2017
Tyrrell's

Today, the winery is managed by Bruce Tyrrell, a 4th generation family member and the head winemaker. In 1989, Bruce completed his first vintage of Semillon and named it 'Vat 1'. Upon its release to the market as an aged Semillon seven years later, it swept the awards shows and is now considered the benchmark of that wine style. As a family endeavour, Bruce and his wife Pauline's children are also involved; Jane is a sales representative of the brand, while her brother Chris as assistant winemaker, helps his father make the wines that have captured the global wine industry's attention.

2017 was an exceptional vintage in the Hunter Valley. Sourced from the Old Hillside vineyard’s mature 50 year old vines (previously owned by the Stevens family). Fermentation occurred in stainless steel open top vats before transfer to mostly newer French oak casks (2700Lt) for 15 months maturation.
Medium to full bodied with a lively, intense purple colour. Black cherry, rapsberry and fresh, spicy flavours dominate the palate with a vibrant, fresh acidity that make the wine a wonderful example of the modern, balanced style of Hunter Valley shiraz.

A radically different bouquet with aromas of black fruits, black olive, French oak and earth leads into a vibrant dark berry palate. A truly fascinating wine, at the moment polarising opinions. It does have one more trick up its sleeve: a mouthwatering, sweet and sour (in the best sense) finish and aftertaste.
