Tyrrell'S Hvd Semillon 2014
Tyrrell's

Today, the winery is managed by Bruce Tyrrell, a 4th generation family member and the head winemaker. In 1989, Bruce completed his first vintage of Semillon and named it 'Vat 1'. Upon its release to the market as an aged Semillon seven years later, it swept the awards shows and is now considered the benchmark of that wine style. As a family endeavour, Bruce and his wife Pauline's children are also involved; Jane is a sales representative of the brand, while her brother Chris as assistant winemaker, helps his father make the wines that have captured the global wine industry's attention.

2014 was an exceptional vintage in the Hunter Valley. Sourced from the ‘Sign Post’ block which was planted in 1908. The vineyard has light, sandy and well-draining soils. Fermented in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures. After fermentation the wine spent a short time on lees before being bottled.
The wine is floral fruit in youth, which moves towards biscuity characters with age. The palate is generally softer bodied with smoother acids than the Vat 1 and Belford Semillons.

This and Vat 1 are my favourites this vintage. Lemon, vanilla, floral notes with the signature HVD lime tucked in nicely. Super clear fruit, beautiful soft line of acid draws it very long, a light flintiness shapes it up. Super long drizzled lime finish. Impeccable, and even as a baby wine, already great to drink.
