Tyrrell'S Belford Chardonnay 2015
Tyrrell's

Today, the winery is managed by Bruce Tyrrell, a 4th generation family member and the head winemaker. In 1989, Bruce completed his first vintage of Semillon and named it 'Vat 1'. Upon its release to the market as an aged Semillon seven years later, it swept the awards shows and is now considered the benchmark of that wine style. As a family endeavour, Bruce and his wife Pauline's children are also involved; Jane is a sales representative of the brand, while her brother Chris as assistant winemaker, helps his father make the wines that have captured the global wine industry's attention.

Belford is a district, and a number of wineries use the name - thus this is a single vineyard from within the district. Although the fermentation was initiated in stainless steel, it was completed in French barriques (20% new).
The nose shows complex, sweet chardonnay fruit and a hint of oak. The palate is balanced between primary fruit flavours and secondary flavours derived from the minimal solids ferment and extended yeast lees contact, the result of which is the complex texture and mouth feel of this wine.

Plenty of struck match, classic Tyrrell’s ‘lime spider’, a little spice and biscuit, some cut fennel. Light and fine boned, but flavoursome, with a subtle vanilla creaminess, flinty texture, cool acidity, and a juicy and toasty finish of excellent length. Wonderful Hunter Chardonnay. Flavour and finesse.

Coming off a difficult vintage, gee this is showing well. It has flavour, as in from the fruit not just the oak and leesy characters, which are here too. Complex, layered with poached quince and ginger and sun-bleached hay, yet tight. Zesty and bright with a lightning rod of acidity so this needs more time.
