TYRRELL'S 'VAT 1' SEMILLON 2005
Tyrrell's

Today, the winery is managed by Bruce Tyrrell, a 4th generation family member and the head winemaker. In 1989, Bruce completed his first vintage of Semillon and named it 'Vat 1'. Upon its release to the market as an aged Semillon seven years later, it swept the awards shows and is now considered the benchmark of that wine style. As a family endeavour, Bruce and his wife Pauline's children are also involved; Jane is a sales representative of the brand, while her brother Chris as assistant winemaker, helps his father make the wines that have captured the global wine industry's attention.

An iconic Australian wine from what is a classic vintage for Hunter Valley semillon.
Showing a tightly structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus fruit flavours. This wine is only just beginning to evolve and show a hint of toasty, bottle aged complexity.

Bright, pale green-straw; the wine has the stamp of the ’05 vintage all over it, with lemon citrus fruit in a seamless, unending stream; its balance, line and length are all perfect; eight gold medals, three trophies.

Light yellow; hard to believe this is six years old, it looks like two! Fresh, youthful, relatively undeveloped lemony and creamy yeast lees aromas, with subtle hints of toast and resin the only suggestion of its age. Crisp and clean in the mouth, even a touch straightforward at this under-developed stage. Rich and almost a suggestion of sweetness from its concentrated and superbly high quality fruit. Very vibrant; clean, tight, reserved, but with terrific intensity and great length. Just starting to enter its drinking window and still has a long way to go.

Clean, lemon, lime, light honeyed tones - subdued - and then? A powerhouse palate presenting juicy, almost sweet, citrus fruit that fills the mouth - remarkable presence for such a light wine. Subtle powdery texture and pure acidity. Length to burn. A classic Vat 1.

The really, really young – not budging at all in terms of aging - 2005 Vat 1 Semillon still shows a little residual CO2 on the nose along with notes of lemon and fresh yuzu zest plus hints of wet pebbles; it is actually a little closed. Not so with the palate as it is bursting with citrus flavor, tons of acid freshness and a very long and pebbly character in the finish. Still young to drink – it could well have 50+ years of ageing potential.
