2014 was an exceptional vintage in the Hunter Valley. The Belford vineyard, planted in 1933, is located 10km northwest of the winery. Furthest vineyard from the Brokenback Range and has the most broken down sandy loam soil, consistency similar to that of talcum powder. After a relatively cool fermentation the wine spent minimal time on lees before being bottled. "A bouquet of ripe apple, citrus and tonic water with an almost light, molten-wax quality to the wine – more ample mouthfeel than suspected, with a slinky honeyed character. Tight, fresh acidity closes the wine and lingers in green apple and grapefruit flavours. So delicious. Fine even though there is richness – elegant wine this all up." - Mike Bennie "It's like a 30yo Rolls Royce that's been looked after well, and is just idling before moving off." - 94 points, James Halliday

This always has a personality all of its own, this year no exception. There is a greater richness and depth to the wines at most stages of their development, and this year is no exception. It's like a 30yo Rolls Royce that's been looked after well, and is just idling before moving off.

This is incredibly complex this year with white-Burgundy intensity and structure. Full body. Energetic center palate and driven finish of dried-apple, lemon and pear flavors. Electric. Drink now or hold.

‘This is my baby. Big berries, juicy and clean, healthy on the vine’, coos winemaker Andrew Spinaze, ‘the vineyard’s on a bit of an L-shape, gets some protection from sun and wind, surrounded by She-oaks, gives it that little edge. Fine talcum-like soil here too. Like powder’. Spinaze’s pick of the 2014 semillons, he admits. A bouquet of ripe apple, citrus and tonic water with an almost light, molten-wax quality to the wine – more ample mouthfeel than suspected, with a slinky honeyed character. Tight, fresh acidity closes the wine and lingers in green apple and grapefruit flavours. So delicious. Fine even though there is richness – elegant wine this all up. One to cellar long.
