Thistledown 'Where Eagles Dare' Eden Valley Shiraz 2019
Thistledown

The unique blend of superb fruit sources and experience in both the New and the Old Worlds helps craft a wine of subtlety, texture and detail – wines perfectly suited to complement rather than overwhelm fine food.
We love hand-making delicious, joyful wines – all sourced from amazing vineyard sites in the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. It's no secret that our real love is Grenache! We make small-batch, hand-made wines from sites that we believe are special. We pick fruit on the way up rather than the way down so that we can do as little as possible to make the best wine. We're slowly gathering the very best selection of Grenache sites in Australia.

Our fruit is sourced from one low yielding block in Joel Mattschoss’ Mengler’s Hill vineyard. The fruit is hand-picked and transferred to the winery. 20% of the total weight is placed in whole bunches in a concrete egg while the balance is crushed and placed on top. A spontaneous fermentation with no physical extraction aims to capture the rugged beauty of the vineyard while preserving the energy and vitality that are the hallmarks of our style. A brief post fermentation maceration is followed by pressing and transfer to 300 litre French hogsheads, of which 50% are new. 12 months later, the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

A selection across two vineyards on either side of Mengler Hill, pruned to abstemious yields, hand-picked and plunged resplendent with 15% whole-bunch, before maturation in French oak (25% new) for 12 months. The result is a more intense expression than its brethren, boasting a vinous drive of mocha, coffee bean and bitter chocolate melded with the assorted dark berry fruits, across the palate. Long and sumptuous. Compelling length. I prefer the juiciness of the regular Barossa wine, but this wins based on its intrinsic qualitative makeup: tenacity and intensity of flavour.
