Critic Scores & reviews

  • Mark Faber

"Complex, robust nose of mulberry, dark fruits, graphite, tar, smoky cassis, which then rolls through on the palate. Excellent grippy Cabernet tannins- lovely chewiness which frames the exceptionally long finish which ends on a chocolate and cedar note. Very good value for money."
  • Sam Kim

"Sourced from the estate’s Morrison’s Vineyard, the rows are at the very top of that vineyard, along the ridge which overlooks Watervale. Similar production methods as for the Cabernet. Fermentation takes place in open fermenters for a period of seven to eight days, with twice daily pumpovers. The results are basket pressed in French oak hogsheads, again 5% are new and the other 95% two to five years of age. The wine then matures in barrel for fifteen months prior to blending and bottling, without fining or filtration. This is a dense, glass-staining purple in colour. Lovely floral and chocolate aromas are entwined with cassis, tobacco leaf, aniseed and more. A wine simply bursting with flavours that is then supple on the palate, nicely balanced and finishing with abundant but silky tannins. Good acidity and excellent length – I love this. Drink it over the next five to ten years while waiting for the Cabernet to peak."
  • Winepilot

"If wine has the equivalent of a ‘pub test’, and please forgive the obvious irony of that suggestion, it is for me, when friends get in touch, unprompted, and start raving about certain bottles. At the moment, the ‘Oath’ series from Kilikanoon is pretty much top of the list for raving friends, so to speak. This wine comes from selected rows from the estate’s Leasingham Vineyard, overlooking Watervale. Transferred to open fermenters for seven to eight days and pumped over twice daily, the wine is then basket pressed into French oak hogsheads, 5% of which are new, with the rest between two and five years old. Then to barrel for fifteen months maturing, followed by blending and bottling, though no fining or filtration. Dark maroon in colour, there are aromas of black cherries and blueberries with some cigar box, cedar and chocolate notes. Concentrated and balanced, there is a minerally backing. Good acidity runs the length of the wine and there is serious grip here – firm tannins on a long finish. Some cocoa powder, more chocolate and black fruits emerge on the palate. Lots to like here already, but give it four to six years and there will be even more to like."

The Australian wine industry is the fourth-largest exporter in the world, exporting 760 million litres to countries such as the UK, France, Italy and Spain. It has been one of the most successful 'New World' wine producing countries. It has done this by formally exporting and marketing its wines as a whole, through Wine Australia. There is also a significant domestic market for Australian wines, with Australians consuming nearly 500 million litres of wine per year. The wine industry is a significant contributor to the Australian economy through production, employment, export and tourism.

Wine regions are in almost all the states with Victoria having 21 regions! Read more about key wine regions such as Margaret River, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley and local to New South Wales, Cowra, Southern Highlands and Mudgee.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the country's vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.

Clare Valley

Situated in the Mid North of South Australia, approximately 120 km north of Adelaide is one of Australia's oldest wine regions the Clare Valley. The area is broken up into three sub-regions, the Polish Hill River region to the east, the Central Clare Valley, and the Skillogalee Valley to the west.

Often associated with some of Australia's finest Riesling the cool climate and differing terroirs have paved the way for exciting and diverse wines over a plethora of varietals resulting in wines of pure expression and great length. Home to some of Australia's most iconic wineries - cult producers like Wendouree, to Australian icons such as Kilikanoon and boutique producers like Atlas, the Clare Valley is definitely an area to keep an eye on for exciting and ever-evolving wines.
