Ponting Wines is a collaboration between one of Australia’s most celebrated cricketers, Ricky Ponting and Ben Riggs, an award-winning Australian winemaker known for uncompromising, high quality wines. Masters of their craft, their partnership has been forged to celebrate their dedication and achievements.

Ben Riggs, in his long and storied career has firmly securely himself amongst Australian Winemaker royalty. Being trained in his early years by legends such as Brian Croser and Murray Tyrrell he has refined his craft, never ceasing to continue his education and drive for perfection. Riggs has crafted these wines with care and attention sourcing impeccable fruit from his long standing network of growers.

One of the things that we love most about wine is its ability to tell a story and when that story revolves around Australia’s greatest sportsmen and is told by one of Australia’s greatest winemakers we couldn’t really ask for more. Each wine in the collection takes inspiration from a particular aspect in Ponting’s life from his early days growing up in Tasmania to his monumental achievements as the Captain of one of the most successful teams this country has ever seen.

This Pinot Noir was sourced from a premium vineyard owned and operated by Riggs' mate Jeremy Dineen (general manager and winemaker of Award-winning estate Josef Chromy)

Fruit was placed in an open ferment with a small percentage of whole bunch fermentation to give structure aromatics and spiciness to Pinot Noir. The fruit spent 10 days on skins in total, was gently pressed, then run straight to barrels, with a small percentage of new oak.

    "It’s varietal and it’s fresh and it drinks well. It’s sweet-sour with rhubarb, red cherry, cedarwood and cranberry flavours though there’s a fair amount of spice in the mix here too. It’s dry to finish and it feels authentic all the way along the line. It’s not short but I kept wanting just a little more length; a little extra time in bottle may well work wonders. In any case it’s a good release."

Apart from being the most southerly wine region in Australia, Tasmania has among the coolest growing subregions with the potential to make distinctly different wines than in the rest of the country.

Most well known for cool-climate varietals like Pinot noir and Chardonnay (thus sparkling too), Sauvignon Blanc smaller plantings of Riesling, Cabernet and Pinot Gris (more commonly Pinot labelled Pinot Grigio)

Historically, Tasmania can lay claim to being the founder of both the Victorian and South Australian wine industries as William Henty sailed from Launceston to Portland (in Victoria) in 1834 and planted grape cuttings there. Though not conclusively proven, it's believed that John Hack planted vines in South Australia in 1837, closely followed in 1838 by John Reynell.

Warmer vintages (possibly attributable to global warming) has had positive effects on region's industry, allowing grapes in recent vintages to achieve full phenolic ripeness, making for vibrant wines that have been widely accepted as world class.

For any athlete, the end of their career brings a lot of questions, let alone when you’ve reached the pinnacle of your sport, and are considered one of the best to ever play the game.

For former Australian Cricket captain Ricky Ponting, the answer was wine. Ponting Wines is a new venture, with a focus on creating the style of wines that appeal to Ricky and his wife Rianna.

Teaming up with McLaren Vale winemaker Ben Riggs (Mr. Riggs), this project is not about cynically slapping the Ponting name on wines and pretending he had something to do with the finished wines (we’re looking at you Shane Warne).

Sourcing fruit from Tasmania, Ricky’s home state, and South Australia where Ben is based, Ponting wines is all about making approachable, punter (no pun intended) friendly wines.
