James Halliday's Wine Companion

TYRRELL'S 'VAT 1' SEMILLON 2015 - "Hand-picked in the early morning, lightly pressed before relatively cool fermentation. This is still in its infancy but is gloriously well balanced, which guarantees youth at 10yo, maturity at 20, and age yet further down the track. When to drink? Your choice."

Gary Walsh

TYRRELL'S 'VAT 1' SEMILLON 2015 - "Vat 1, year in, year out, rarely sets a foot wrong. Honey and some soapy perfume, white fruit like pears, plus mixed citrus and a flicker of pepper. Light in body, yet delivers plenty of flavour, ripe lime, lovely clean acidity – almost a sherbetty character – then a finish that’s light, delicate but very long. Precision and beauty. Good bet for the cellar too."

James Halliday

TYRRELL'S 'VAT 1' SEMILLON 2011 - "Vat 1 can always be relied upon to deliver a pure, focused and linear wine, year-in, year-out; as a young wine, there is just enough flesh for a little pleasure, with lemon sherbet, lime leaf and straw; the structure indicates a long future ahead, and real pleasure will come at least five years down the track. Certainly worth investing both time and money to watch it truly come together."

Gary Walsh

TYRRELL'S 'VAT 1' SEMILLON 2011 - "This Vat 1 may well be the best of the 2011 Tyrrell’s Semillons, though I think I prefer the Johnno’s and Belford this year. Early days. Think I’ll pop a couple of bottles of each into the cellar and make a firm decision in about ten years.. Youthful banana esters with a little grass and hay like character. It’s fine boned, limey and lightly flinty with a long dry finish. Features an attractive roundness of fruit married to even handed acidity – bright and zesty it is, piercing and terse it is not. The smooth operator of this year’s Semillon line up who’s subtle charms may go under-appreciated in a hurried appraisal."

Tyson Stelzer

TYRRELL'S 'VAT 1' SEMILLON 2011 - "The Hunter’s most famous blended semillon is the wine of the vintage, thanks to a fine, chalky minerality and enticing fragrance."
