The 2019 vintage in the Adelaide Hills really allowed this shiraz to live up to its reputation. This is a wine bursting with flavour, it is a light to medium bodied cool climate shiraz that has become a flagship within the Mike Press portfolio. The palate has richness with ripe red cherries, blackberry and plums. It is integrated with spices and vanilla which has come from the oak. A balanced wine that can easily be enjoyed now but will cellar well for 5 years or more.

    "(2018 vintage) The price/quality ratio here is remarkable. As it is pretty much every year. Buy. Drink. Order some more. Repeat. This release has been so well turned out. Plum, black cherry, vanilla and toast flavours. Svelte texture. Fine-grained, well-meshed tannin. It’s all in order, it’s all been done well. You can drink this now. You can drink it in five years. Mike Press Shiraz does it again."

Australia's wine regions are scattered across the south and southeast, with almost every state boasting its own vineyards. Victoria, for example, is home to an impressive 21 wine regions. Some of the most famous wine regions in Australia include Margaret River, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley, and local regions to New South Wales such as Cowra, Southern Highlands, and Mudgee.

Australian winemakers are known for producing a diverse range of grape varieties, with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir being among the most popular. They tend to focus on producing wines that are ripe, fruit-forward, and easy to drink, using modern winemaking techniques and equipment such as stainless steel tanks and temperature-controlled fermentation.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the country's vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.

Adelaide Hills

Famous for their Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir, the viticulture of this region was re-established in 1979 but grapes were planted locally as early as 1839. During the last three decades, Adelaide Hills has emerged as one of Australia’s most exciting cool climate wine region, being known to produce elegant, distinct, sophisticated wines. Located in the Mount Lofty Ranges and only a 30 minute drive from Adelaide, this region is home not only to over 90 wine labels and 48 cellar doors, but also to multiple forests, beef and dairy farms, apple and pear orchards.

Known to be one of the largest geographical wine regions in Australia, the Adelaide Hills are made up of two registered sub regions: Lenswood and Piccadilly Valley. These narrow band of hills stretch across to be approximately 70 km long and 30 km wide and border Barossa and Eden Valleys to the North and McLaren Vale to the South.

The climate of this region is considerably cooler compared to other wine regions in the summer, due to the altitudes of the vineyards being 400-700 meters high. The cooler drier climate produces grapes with ideal fruit composition, creating the perfect balance of flavour and acidity.

Starting off his career working with Max Schubert at Penfolds, he moved to Seppelts, then on to become Chief winemaker for Mildara Blass. He even entered a cleanskin Shiraz-Cabernet into the acclaimed Jimmy Watson Trophy, and picked up 2nd place. Nowadays he crafts single-vineyard wines from his Adelaide Hills vineyard with the philosophy and goal of delivering top quality wine at an affordable price.

The secret to its success lies in a nurtured vineyard, more than four decades of experience and he and his wife Judy's commitment to bringing the best possible wines to the end consumer without charging excessively!
