Masciarelli Tenute Agricole was established in 1981 from the entrepreneurial intuition of Gianni Masciarelli. Gianni was a believer in the high quality of wines that could come from the diverse regions of Abruzzo, often overlooked by drinkers on the west coast and north of Italy. The Castello (Castle) range is named after the Castello do Semivicoli, built in the seventeenth century, which the Masciarelli family owns, as well as the surrounding vineyards where this wine originates. The Castello sits at the peak of the impressively high mountains of Abruzzo, which is bathed in generous sunshine by day, but experiences cold evenings, even in summer. This altitude gives Pecorino (which can be quite round and warm in hot, seaside climes) a freshness and lightness, as well as citrus aromas to match its natural minerality and savoury finish.
