Mania allows Jim Chatto to broaden his Tasmanian winemaking outside the Huon Valley, leveraging friendships built over the years to source parcels of fruit from small growers across the state. The Mania Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as a slightly more approachable expression of the Chatto style. The 2019 Mania Pinot Noir is crafted using the fruit sourced from three distinct regional zones across Tasmania. An individual vineyard from each of the Huon Valley, Tamar Valley and the East Coast of Tasmania and including multiple clones have been masterfully blended contributing great nuance and detail to the wine. The fruit for this wine was hand-picked and hand-sorted. Wild yeast fermented and periodically hand plunged, this is a wine showcasing fruit generosity and vibrancy supported by the gentler handling in the winery. The wine was matured for 10 months in French oak puncheons of which 10% was new.

Mania is the “budget” label of Jim and Daisy Chatto, who also produce premium Tasmanian wines under their Isle and Chatto labels. This is a blend of fruit from three different regions; the Huon Valley, Tamar Valley and East Coast, hand-picked and sorted, wild fermented and matured in aged French oak puncheons for 10 months. Distributed by Fourth Wave Wines, this is well balanced and immediately accessible but still has the style and complexity for which Chatto is known. Well worth checking out.

‘Mania’ a good word to describe an obsession with Pinot Noir. And append a ‘c’ to it, and you have maniac. (2018 vintage) Smoky, twiggy, red fruits, meat pie, spice. Light, dry and twiggy, savoury style, strawberry in the back, little scratch of tannin, pretty good finish. Kind of serious and bony, but good.
