Mania allows Jim Chatto to broaden his Tasmanian winemaking outside the Huon Valley, leveraging friendships built over the years to source parcels of fruit from small growers across the state. The Mania Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are a slightly more approachable expression of the Chatto style, perfect for leading restaurants. The 2016 Mania Tamar Valley Chardonnay is sourced from the Huon, Tamar and East Coast regions. Allowed to ferment naturally using wild yeast. Matured for ten months in French oak puncheons, fifteen percent new with battonage for three months post fermentation. A subtle and pure nose of damson fruits, subtle notes of dried herbs and black earth, framed by firm tannins and bright, refreshing acidity. The palate is classically elegant and smooth, with red and blue fruits combined with spiced truffle flavours beginning to unveil whilst carried along by a taut acid backbone. Overall excellent drinking pleasure now but gaining flavour and complexity over the next five to ten years.

Made by Jim Chatto from a blend of Tamar, East Coast and Huon vineyards. The back label quotes Andre Tchelistcheff – “God made Cabernet: the Devil made Pinot Noir.” Nebbiolo, of course, was made through the gradual process of evolution… Savoury styling with some smokiness, cherry and strawberry, a bit of lift, some rosiness and spice. It’s fine and leaner in style, but does deliver flavour, has a pleasing sort of ‘mineral’ feel to the acidity, very fine dusty tannin, and smoky autumn leaf and roses trailing in the finish. Restrained, and quite sophisticated. Feels pretty young right now, and suspect it has a bit more to come. - 92+ points
