Mahana

Mahana: 'The return of Michael Glover' After 10 years as winemaker at the iconic and revered Bannockburn Vineyards, Michael Glover has returned to his roots in Nelson, New Zealand in the quest for the Holy Grail and the ultimate expression of ‘terroir driven’ Pinot Noir. In his time at Bannockburn he pushed boundaries, challenged existing practises, changed perceptions and crafted some of the most exciting Pinot Noirs in Australia. His Mammoth Pinot Noir is one of the most alluring NZ Pinots we have seen for some time, perfectly balancing New World generosity with Old World subtlety and power. Michael’s love of whole bunch fermentation shows through, but it is the fruit that speaks loudest. Glover’s new home is the Mahana vineyard, a picture-perfect, 16-year-old, certified organic vineyard with a gravity fed, underground cellar that would be the envy of many a winemaker across the globe. Funded by hotelier, philanthropist and renowned art collector Glenn Schaeffer, Glover has been given carte blanche to create the greatest wines possible from what is clearly a superb terroir. He began working with the fruit of Mahana in the 2013 harvest with his first Mammoth Pinot Noir. It was this connection, and no doubt the wine that resulted, that led to Glover being offered the chief winemaker position.
