Editors notes

La Petite Mort is the receptacle of these experimental wines. Unfined and unfiltered, these wines are made in a deliberately candid, 'rustic' style with minimal addition and intervention so as not to muddy the results of our trial and retain the fullness of flavour that we see when we taste from the barrel before bottling.

In true Portugese Madeira style this wine has basked naturally in the sun outside Glen and Robert's shed, topped up each year with Verdelho. It's a sweet dessert wine with those rich citrus and full tropical salad notes, it screams deliciousness.

Australia

Australia's wine industry is a thriving part of the country's economy, contributing significantly to employment, production, export, and tourism. In fact, the industry is the fourth-largest wine exporter in the world, shipping out 760 million liters of wine to countries including France, Italy, Spain, and the UK. One of the key factors contributing to Australia's success as a "New World" wine producer is the formal export and marketing of its wines through Wine Australia.

Australia's wine regions are scattered across the south and southeast, with almost every state boasting its own vineyards. Victoria, for example, is home to an impressive 21 wine regions. Some of the most famous wine regions in Australia include Margaret River, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley, and local regions to New South Wales such as Cowra, Southern Highlands, and Mudgee.

Australian winemakers are known for producing a diverse range of grape varieties, with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir being among the most popular. They tend to focus on producing wines that are ripe, fruit-forward, and easy to drink, using modern winemaking techniques and equipment such as stainless steel tanks and temperature-controlled fermentation.

With its bold, fruit-driven flavors and reputation for quality and diversity, Australian wine has become a popular choice for wine lovers around the world. And with such a broad range of wine regions and grape varieties, there's something for every palate to enjoy.

Queensland

Compared with other Australian states, Queensland produces a relatively small amount of wine. However, it does comprise a number of wine-producing regions, including the Granite Belt, the Scenic Rim/Gold Coast Hinterland, Wide Bay–Burnett, South Burnett, Darling Downs, and Brisbane/Greater Brisbane/The Sunshine Coast. Here, vineyards often are at higher altitudes to counteract the state’s hot climate. The Granite Belt, on the Queensland/New South Wales border, features 250-million-year-old granitic soils and some of the highest vineyards in Australia (at more than 1,000 metres above sea level). The region produces more than 60% of the state’s wine. The Scenic Rim/Gold Coast Hinterland produces both a number of emerging varietals, such as Verdelho, Chambourcin, and Viognier, and classic varietals, including Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Merlot. Queensland’s largest wine region, South Burnett, boasts warm summer days and crisp, cool nights; terra rossa soils; and such varietals as Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

About the brand La Petite Mort

Nestled close to 1000m above sea level in Queensland’s Granite Belt GI, La Petite Mort is the experimental project of head winemaker Glen Robert and his partner and Viticulturalist Robert Richter. After opting for a tree-change back in 2000 the pair purchased the Bent Road property and immediately set about planting vines. Their approach to vineyard maintenance has always been minimal and reactive – intervening only when necessary and using only organic friendly products (although they are consciously not certified organic producers).

The winemaking follows a similar ethos with former biochemist Glen taking a careful and considered approach, and always with a deliberate style in mind. With a diverse and eclectic line-up spanning everything from classic Rhone blends to amphora aged amber wines to contemporary takes on Italian classics, at the heart of everything is the spirit of experimentation and the pursuit of rough perfection, through constant refining and honing of their skills. Striking a fine balance between tradition and technique, La Petite Mort wines are well-made yet rustic and characterful, showcasing a host of unusual and innovative styles. Whilst the wines are bold, adventurous and certainly not for the conservative palate, they are also instructional, characterful and down-right captivating.
