A blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvedre. The wine shows a compelling combo of tea leaf, candle wax and graphite in its aromas. Dark fruits and an underlying chalky note (grenache from slate soils!) show up in the finish, along with a refreshing acidity.

In a neat parallel to the avant garde of Australian wine, there’s a shift going on in California too. Exciting, youngish producers seeking out old, overlooked vineyards, lesser varieties, sidelined fruit sources and less fashionable parishes for winemaking. Hank Beckmeyer, wine grower and farmer, should be on your radar. This wine is produced from 70% grenache and 30% mourvedre with minimal intervention and an eye on a lighter shade of California. These are rare birds, even in the US of A. Gobsmackingly delicious and beautiful to drink. Silken charm, crisp fruit character, wickedly pretty perfume. Sits up high with red fruits, touch of currants, whiff of peppery spice, herbs and earth dusted off them. It’s cool a(more...)
