Editors notes

If you're looking for a wine that will age well, then the Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 2019 is an excellent choice. The wine has a high sugar content and acidity, which means it can age for many years, developing even more complex flavours over time.

Aromatic, with notes of honey, orange blossom, and apricot, as well as hints of spice and vanilla.

Rich and full-bodied, with a luscious texture and flavours of honey, candied citrus peel, and ripe stone fruits, such as apricot and peach. The sweetness of the wine is balanced by a lively acidity, which gives it a refreshing and vibrant finish. As the wine lingers in the mouth, subtle notes of spice and vanilla emerge, adding another layer of complexity to its profile.

"Barrel sample of the initial blend. Will be reblended after three years’ barrel maturation. RS 162 g/l. Intense, powerful nose of apricot, orange and white flowers. On the palate, rich and sweet with a touch of spice, but a very fine line of acidity keeping beautiful harmony. Very long. This will fill out with more vanilla creaminess from longer maturation. - Tim Jackson MW"

"Butterscotch, lemon patisserie and peach aromas. Pristine quality to the texture, lively and thrilling, this is a serious, opulent and powerful wine, more on the spiced, nuanced side with aspects of dried herbs, wood scents and bitter lemon and orange with a touch of honeyed lychee. It feels supremely complex and characterful. Sophisticated, layered and balanced with some minerality, a slight graphite edge all of which adds to the whole. It's still extremely youthful but there is real sculpting here, a sense of precision, style and freshness. Well crafted with an extremely long life ahead. A wonder, and one of the best from the estate! Drink: 2024 - 2056."

Locations

South Africa

You’ll find the bulk of South Africa’s wine regions on or near the coast of the Cape, where they leverage the cooling influence of the Southern Ocean. Combined with the mountain ranges that run through many of the regions, providing various altitudes, aspects, and soils, this unique landscape yields a wide range of wine styles. Among the black grape varieties planted here are Cabernet Sauvignon (the most widely planted), Merlot, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. Pinotage, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, also has significant plantings and is little grown elsewhere in the world. Winemakers create Pinotage in a range of styles, from light and fruity to full-bodied old-vine wines. Among the white grape varieties, Chenin Blanc is the most widely planted grape of either colour; Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are also widely grown. Among the prominent winemaking areas of South Africa are Stellenbosch, Paarl, Swartland, Walker Bay, Durbanville, Constantia, Worcester, Robertson, Elgin, and Elim.

Coastal Region

Stretching from Darling in the north to Cape Point and Constantia in the south, and to Stellenbosch and Paarl in the east, the Coastal Region is a significant wine-producing area in the Western Cape that forms the heart of the South African wine industry.
The Coastal Region takes climatic influences from both the ocean and the mountains. Areas closest to the coast have maritime climates with an abundance of ocean breezes, while areas further inland have more of Mediterranean climate. Higher altitudes and trapped cloud cover can help to refresh vineyards in areas like Tulbagh and Franschhoek Valley, and contribute to the diurnal temperature variations which have a positive effect in the vineyards.

There is a huge variation of grape varieties cultivated in the Coastal Region. Sauvignon Blanc is grown along the coast in Tygerberg, Constantia and Cape Point. The bush vine Sauvignon Blanc from Darling is a particularly unusual wine made in the region. Towards the inland mountain ranges, where the climate is hotter and drier, there is more Shiraz,Chenin Blanc and Pinotage grown. In the more southern areas of Stellenbosch and Constantia, wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are often found together as part of a Bordeaux Blend.

Classified in 1973 in the "Wine of Origins" Program, including: Cape Peninsula, Darling, Franschhoek/Franschhoek Valley, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Swartland, Tulbagh, Tygerberg and Wellington.

Constantia

Constantia is a historic wine-growing ward in the district of Cape Town in the Coastal Region of South Africa. The area is rainy, with as much as 1,000mm of rain annually, and relatively cool, with nearby False Bay carrying in chilling sea breezes. Soils here comprise decomposed granite, clay, and sandstone; these soils are both free-draining and fertile. Primary plantings are of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz. The ward’s winemaking history dates back to the 17th century, and in the 18th and 19th centuries, it became famous as the home to Vin de Constance, a popular sweet white dessert wine made from dried Muscat. These days, the ward also has a reputation for premium, cool-climate Bordeaux blends and Sauvignon Blanc.
