Following the pattern of recent years, the preceding winter rainfalls were above average followed by slightly drier conditions through spring. Warmer than average conditions through October and November promoted healthy canopies, good flowering and a healthy set of bunches. Very dry conditions through summer challenged growers to maintain good vineyard health, and they were rewarded with perfect ripening and harvest conditions throughout March and early April. Mataro was sourced from a single dry grown centenarian vineyard in the Light Pass subdistrict of the Barossa Valley. Growing in sandy soils near the banks of the North Para River, this vineyard produces exceptionally low yields of intensely flavoured and firmly structured fruit. The fruit was fermented in small open top stainless-steel fermenters with twice daily pump overs for 8 days, before maturation for 15 months in fine-grained French oak (30% in a new 500 litre puncheon, the balance in seasoned hogsheads).

John Duval is a master blender. This is all about the best of the vintage, fruit from various sites across the Barossa and Eden Valleys, to morph into the mighty Eligo. A powerhouse of flavour yet never loses focus. Dark plums infused with star anise, cinnamon, Dutch licorice and soy sauce. Full-bodied with velvety rich tannins. It gets the most oak – French hogsheads 54% new, aged 18 months, and needs time to settle in. It will.

This is straight up an epic wine. It shows layers and layers of concentrated dense fruit character but feels light and fresh despite that heft. There is impossibly detailed spice, herbal notes, seasoning of oak and bright acidity. The extension of flavour is just outstanding. All up it feels incredibly classy and the fruit is just singing so beautifully.
