How to get the best from our Zoom Online Tastings

We've noticed there are a few groups in the tastings. If you would like a bigger image and better sound quality and perhaps a more comfortable setting to enjoy the tasting it might be an idea to run the zoom meeting through the TV. Having a larger screen also allows you to see split or circulate the view between the presentation and gallery view of participants.

If you're not too familiar with how to set this up here is a walkthrough to help with the get started.

Chrome Cast

  1. Setup your Chromecast, make sure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Chromecast.
  2. Find the casting option on your phone, scan for devices to share to.
  3. Tap your Chromecast and the phone's screen will appear on your TV.
  4. Open Zoom as normal on your phone, rotating into landscape will give you the best view.
  5. The same process as above applies for laptops, but you need to cast the whole desktop rather than just the tab. That's because Zoom wants to run in its own app and if you're only casting a tab, you'll just get that tab and not the actual Zoom app.

Air Play and Apple TV

  1. One of the easiest ways if you have an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, is to use AirPlay and Apple TV. (This option also works if you have a recent television that supports AirPlay)
  2. As always with Apple devices, ensure the software is up-to-date on both the iOS or device as well as the Apple TV.
  3. Make sure your iOS device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Apple TV otherwise it won't work.
  4. Pull down the Action Center from the top right of your iPhone or iPad on Face ID-enabled iPhones or any iPads that are able to run iPadOS. You need to swipe up from the bottom on other Touch ID devices.
  5. Tap Screen Mirroring.
  6. Tap the name of your Apple TV that appears in the list. Your screen will then mirror to the Apple TV.
  7. Open Zoom and you should be up and running.

HDMI Cable

  1. Connecting via cable means you don't have to worry about dropping the wireless signal, so can be more stable - but it also means your source device is then tethered to the TV, so you can't just go for a walk. It might also mean that the camera and microphone are further away from you than you want them to be.
  2. Connect your HDMI cable to the port in your Laptop
  3. Choose the correct input on your television remote
  4. Make sure the sound output in the bottle left corner of your laptop is set to your TV

You can also make Zoom sound better

Phones and laptops generally have poor speakers and microphones, which will downgrade the audio experience. If you're sharing with your TV, you'll probably then be using your TV speaker or a home cinema system for the audio, which could sound a lot better.

An alternative is to use a Bluetooth speaker. That means you can connect a Bluetooth speaker and have that close to you, prop up your phone across the room and you'll still be able to hear everything.
