Editors notes

A superb wine that shows immensely vivacious and vibrant fruit, red cherries and hints of cassis here, spiced oak nuances and rosehip, gentle foresty bracken too - fresh and exciting. The palate is supple on entry then succulent as it builds, this has weight and density with elegance and velvet texture, iron fist in a deep cherry velvet glove here. Superb wine - great length, saffron and Moroccan spice at the finish.

"I’m goin’ way down south, way down south Way down to Mexico way, yeah I’m goin’ way down south, way down south, baby Way down where I can be free I’d argue this comes from one of the best Pinot sites in the country, from one of the best Pinot winemakers. Dark cherry, red berry, perfume, spice, a handful of rose petals, konbu and gentle creamy oak. Medium bodied, superb texture with a fine lacy spread of mouth saturating, yet gentle, tannin, carried long by clean mineral acidity, culminating in a finish that unfurls and leaves you wanting more. Perfect balance between fruit weight and structure here. What a wine! If you find a better Pinot Noir grown in this hemisphere, be sure to let me know."

Locations

Australia

Australia's wine industry is a thriving part of the country's economy, contributing significantly to employment, production, export, and tourism. In fact, the industry is the fourth-largest wine exporter in the world, shipping out 760 million liters of wine to countries including France, Italy, Spain, and the UK. One of the key factors contributing to Australia's success as a "New World" wine producer is the formal export and marketing of its wines through Wine Australia.

Australia's wine regions are scattered across the south and southeast, with almost every state boasting its own vineyards. Victoria, for example, is home to an impressive 21 wine regions. Some of the most famous wine regions in Australia include Margaret River, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley, and local regions to New South Wales such as Cowra, Southern Highlands, and Mudgee.

Australian winemakers are known for producing a diverse range of grape varieties, with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir being among the most popular. They tend to focus on producing wines that are ripe, fruit-forward, and easy to drink, using modern winemaking techniques and equipment such as stainless steel tanks and temperature-controlled fermentation.

With its bold, fruit-driven flavors and reputation for quality and diversity, Australian wine has become a popular choice for wine lovers around the world. And with such a broad range of wine regions and grape varieties, there's something for every palate to enjoy.

Tasmania

Apart from being the most southerly wine region in Australia, Tasmania has among the coolest growing subregions with the potential to make distinctly different wines than in the rest of the country.

Most well known for cool-climate varietals like Pinot noir and Chardonnay (thus sparkling too), Sauvignon Blanc smaller plantings of Riesling, Cabernet and Pinot Gris (more commonly Pinot labelled Pinot Grigio)

Historically, Tasmania can lay claim to being the founder of both the Victorian and South Australian wine industries as William Henty sailed from Launceston to Portland (in Victoria) in 1834 and planted grape cuttings there. Though not conclusively proven, it's believed that John Hack planted vines in South Australia in 1837, closely followed in 1838 by John Reynell.

Warmer vintages (possibly attributable to global warming) has had positive effects on region's industry, allowing grapes in recent vintages to achieve full phenolic ripeness, making for vibrant wines that have been widely accepted as world class.

About the brand Stoney Rise Wine Company

The Stoney Rise Wine Company is a boutique vineyard and cellar door based in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley. It is the brainchild of Joe Holyman and his wife Lou.

Stoney Rise was established in 2000 with an eye to produce wines that are food friendly, and offer people complex wines without too much oak, or overripe fruit characters. The name comes from a surf break in the Little Dip Conservation Park behind Robe in South Australia.
