Editors notes

The 2021 Riesling is a fine and delicate wine with lovely aromatics and a minerally/slatey palate. The nose displays aromas of lime leaf and jasmine with some spiced apple characters, whilst the palate shows mineral characteristics with fantastic fruit purity and light, flinty acidity.

All fruit for this wine was sourced from the Estate vineyard at Rowella. the vineyard is planted to 3 (unknown) clones of Riesling. One more mineral and citrus, one more floral and aromatic, and the other a bit between the two. This results in a beautiful flinty style of Riesling with lifted floral aromatics and a strong citrus backbone. To achieve this, fruit is harvested at around 11.5 Baume, pressed to tank, racked and then cool fermented the juice with inoculated yeast. The wine was then lightly fined and filtered and bottled as soon as possible to maintain maximum freshness and aromatics.

"(2020)Riesling from the Tamar Valley in Tasmania. Sweet citrus and red apple flavours swing convincingly through the palate and out through the finish. There’s texture here, intensity, fruit-sweetness and length. It works beautifully."

Locations

Australia

Australia's wine industry is a thriving part of the country's economy, contributing significantly to employment, production, export, and tourism. In fact, the industry is the fourth-largest wine exporter in the world, shipping out 760 million liters of wine to countries including France, Italy, Spain, and the UK. One of the key factors contributing to Australia's success as a "New World" wine producer is the formal export and marketing of its wines through Wine Australia.

Australia's wine regions are scattered across the south and southeast, with almost every state boasting its own vineyards. Victoria, for example, is home to an impressive 21 wine regions. Some of the most famous wine regions in Australia include Margaret River, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley, and local regions to New South Wales such as Cowra, Southern Highlands, and Mudgee.

Australian winemakers are known for producing a diverse range of grape varieties, with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir being among the most popular. They tend to focus on producing wines that are ripe, fruit-forward, and easy to drink, using modern winemaking techniques and equipment such as stainless steel tanks and temperature-controlled fermentation.

With its bold, fruit-driven flavors and reputation for quality and diversity, Australian wine has become a popular choice for wine lovers around the world. And with such a broad range of wine regions and grape varieties, there's something for every palate to enjoy.

Tasmania

Apart from being the most southerly wine region in Australia, Tasmania has among the coolest growing subregions with the potential to make distinctly different wines than in the rest of the country.

Most well known for cool-climate varietals like Pinot noir and Chardonnay (thus sparkling too), Sauvignon Blanc smaller plantings of Riesling, Cabernet and Pinot Gris (more commonly Pinot labelled Pinot Grigio)

Historically, Tasmania can lay claim to being the founder of both the Victorian and South Australian wine industries as William Henty sailed from Launceston to Portland (in Victoria) in 1834 and planted grape cuttings there. Though not conclusively proven, it's believed that John Hack planted vines in South Australia in 1837, closely followed in 1838 by John Reynell.

Warmer vintages (possibly attributable to global warming) has had positive effects on region's industry, allowing grapes in recent vintages to achieve full phenolic ripeness, making for vibrant wines that have been widely accepted as world class.

Tamar Valley

The Tamar Valley, near the city of Launceston, is both Tasmania’s oldest wine-growing region and largest viticultural area. It sits on the west bank of the Tamar River, which flows from Launceston to Bass Strait. Soil here is gravelly basalt on a clay and limestone base. The area has a reputation for premium cool-climate wines, but the climate is also warm enough to ripen Cabernet Sauvignon. Among the area’s popular varieties are Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir. The area has also become famed for exceptional sparkling wines, with winemakers producing classic white sparkling wines from a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay, all of which thrive on the island.

About the brand Holm Oak

Located in Tamar Valley, Tasmania, Holm Oak’s estate vineyards are steeped in sporting history. In the 1930s, Alexander Patent Racquet Co. selected the site for cultivation of Holm Oak trees, intended for use in the production of tennis racquets.

Sadly, the wood from the Holm Oak trees didn’t meet the standards required by the company. That’s where this story takes a fortuitous turn for the Tasmanian wine industry; grape vines were planted in the rich and fertile land in 1983, making Holm Oak one of the older vineyards in Tasmania. Using the original Pinot Noir and Cabernet plantings, we now also cultivate Arneis, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

Holm Oak’s premium estate-grown Pinot Noir, ‘The Wizard’ was inspired by the site’s tennis heritage. Sourced from six specific rows of the vineyard, it was named after the famous tennis racquet of the same name. Produced by Alexander Patent Racquet Co, it was used by Australia’s Jack Crawford when he won Wimbledon in 1933.
