This beautiful wine is fine, supple and utterly satisfying; evoking notes of blackberry, ripe fig, and Arabic coffee. Although seductive in it's youth, you will be rewarded with patience. A wine of long-term promise. It reacts faster to an airing in the decanter, mellowing nicely, but may well outlive the three varietal wines. It retains an unlikely softness given its serious long-term potential; its silky elegance is deceptive: there’s enough form in this bottle to carry it for decades.

I tasted through some Napa wines (of which more later) and six from the Hickinbotham vintage 2017 collection with winemaker Chris Carpenter yesterday. This was the last wine tasted, though not the least. Chris tells me that he selects the Cabernet component (solo) while Pete Fraser chooses the Shiraz. It’s a bit like Hal David writing the lyrics, while Burt Bacharach writes the toons. 204 cases made from specific vineyards, and subsequent barrel selection. Blue and black fruit, a bit of earth, vanilla, subtle mint and floral elements. Deep and round, fleshy and chocolaty, plush with ripe well-submerged tannin, all so smooth and even-keeled, finishing lip-smackingly long. Classic Australian blend with no shortage of style. Puts a smile on the face.

(2016 vintage) 57/43%, fermented separately, 100% new oak. As always, it's about choosing the best parcels of fruit and barrels for this high-end wine. It's seamless. The pristine fruit absorbing the oak, the filigreed tannins, the chalky acidity, everything doing their bit to create a complete wine. While incredibly fresh, its best days are ahead of it. 460 dozen.

(2016 vintage) The fruit is perfectly ripe and the wine is superbly balanced; where it differs from the Trueman cabernet and the Brooks Road shiraz is its structure. It has a firmer backbone, which will ensure it ages well and long. Black, red and blue berry aromas and flavours, cedar and spice, the shiraz spice receding the longer the wine is aerated. A wonderful glass of red wine. (57% cabernet, 43% shiraz; 80% new oak; 45 year-old vines. 467 cases made).
