From the Clos des Poncetys and Les Combes, Guffens crafted a mere six barrels of this splendid Saint-Véran from the racier, purer must of a gentle first pressing by Guffen's adapted Coquard (Champagne) press. Hence 1er Jus. Clos des Poncetys is a small vineyard that lies below the Vergisson rock, and Guffens has described it as the "Chevalier-Montrachet of Davayé", a clear reference to the steepness of the site, the rocky, limestone-rich soil, and the site's ability to produce ultra-pure flavours with tremendous stuffing and extract. Guffens blends this fruit with that of Les Combes, a terroir which lies on the south-facing slope of Chasselas for its freshness and minerality. And if you're wondering if Guffens is taking the micky with using "1er" in a region with no 1er crus (as yet), the answer is absolutely!

From the Clos des Poncetys and Les Combes, the 2017 Saint-Véran 1er Jus is strikingly good, even at this early stage, exhibiting classy aromas of citrus oil, oatmeal and crisp orchard fruit. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and multidimensional, with beautiful cut and tension. Incisive and concentrated, it has all the makings of a great Saint-Véran that will surpass this cuvée's last rendition, the 2015.
