Gourt de Mautens
The Gourt de Mautens estate covers 13ha of vines and 1.5 ha of fruit and olive trees scattered around the estate. The entire vineyard has been organically farmed since 1989 (ECOCERT certified) and biodynamically farmed since 2008 (DEMETER certified).
The plots are situated solely on Rasteau terroirs, on terraces and hillsides as well as at the foot of hillsides, terraces and plateaux. These are north-west and south-west exposed. The terroirs are chalky clay marls. The particularity of Rasteau terroir marls is that they prevent water stress, regulate water and give the wines that they produce good depth. The chalky soils give wines their character.
Most of the vines are between 30 and 100 years old. They are all pruned using the 'gobelet' method, historically a classic pruning approach but which is on the wane due to the increasing mechanisation of wine growing practices today. The old vines and the self regulation of the plant produce very low yields of between 10 to 15hl. The aim of such low yields is to bring out the quintessence of each plot, which will then be blended to create a fine wine.
At the Gourt de Mautens estate, there is a wide range of different grape varieties. The red varieties are: Grenache noir, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Shiraz, Counoise, Cinsault, Vaccarèse and Terret noir. The white varieties are: Grenache blanc and gris, Bourboulenc, Clairette blanche, Picardan, Roussane, Marsanne, Viognier, Picpoul blanc and gris.
