Gilbert Family Wines began its journey in 2004 by fifth generation winemaker Simon Gilbert. Simon has always had a strong desire to do things his own way and create a label true to himself, at the same time paying tribute to his heritage.

    "I reckon they should plant Pelaverga, Trousseau, and other kinds of light bodied red grapes up in Orange. I’d like to see that. Juicy and pretty little number, all strawberry, raspberry and baking spices, with a little dried rose. It’s a playful Pinot Noir, almost jubey in its youth, but has attractive emery tannin, freshness and a finish of solid length. Nicely turned out, and likely better again with a year or two under its belt. I like it.""

It has been one of the most successful 'New World' wine producing countries. It has done this by formally exporting and marketing its wines as a whole, through Wine Australia. There is also a significant domestic market for Australian wines, with Australians consuming nearly 500 million litres of wine per year. The wine industry is a significant contributor to the Australian economy through production, employment, export and tourism.

New South Wales

Home to 14 official wine regions, New South Wales offers a diverse and wide-ranging expanse to produce wines that appeal to every palate.

From Australia’s oldest continuous wine region – the famous Hunter Valley – to exciting new cool climate regions such as Orange, the Southern Highlands and Tumbarumba, these regions can be found to produce some of the best Australian Wine around. Recognised as the second-largest wine-producing state in Australia, New South Wales is also the most populous state with its wine consumption far outpacing the region's wine production. Although the Hunter Valley region is well known, the majority of wineries are located along the Murray and Darling Rivers (in the south-east of the state) which supplies water for many of the region's wineries.

Other regions within New South Wales include the Canberra District, Cowra, Gundagai, Hastings River, Hilltops, Mudgee, New England, Perricoota, Riverina and the Shoalhaven Coast.

Orange

Not to be confused with the ‘orange wine’ category, the Orange subregion is part of the Central Ranges wine-producing zone of New South Wales, Australia. Though Orange has a long winemaking heritage, the past two decades have really seen this area’s reputation develop for high-quality wines – especially from small producers. The vineyards of Orange sit at altitudes of roughly 600 to 900 meters (sometimes even higher) above sea level on the slopes of Mount Canobolas, an extinct volcano that’s part of Australia’s Great Dividing Range. Soil types in Orange include red volcanic basalt, clay loams, and shallow gravels. Orange has a continental climate, where windy conditions can both help and hinder viticulture – they can reduce the risk of spring frosts but can hamper fruit set. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are the predominant black-grape varieties here. Producers generally plant these vines on the lower, somewhat warmer slopes. Shiraz from Orange is typically medium-bodied, with flavours of red fruit and spices. Cabernet Sauvignon wines are likewise medium-bodied but boast black-fruit (think blackcurrant) and earthy notes. The higher-up, somewhat cooler vineyards grow primarily white grapes, including Chardonnay (the most planted variety), Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Gris. Orange Chardonnay wines typically boast aromas and flavours of citrus fruit and stone fruit. They are medium-bodied and high in acid.
