Frederick Stevenson
The Barossa Valley isn’t exactly known for producing light and bright crunchy reds, but it takes innovative producers like Steve Crawford at Frederick Stevenson to push those conventions around. Refined, elegant and tightly structured, the wines of the elusive Frederick Stevenson focus on fruit sourced from two vineyard sites – the biodynamic Vine Vale property in the Barossa Valley, and a rugged hilltop to the north of the Eden Valley.
Initially, an underground label from Steve, the wines of Frederick Stevenson present themselves as a nod to both traditional Australian wines and an exploration of less familiar varieties and styles. Small batches and minimal intervention are their game; it starts in the vineyard and ends when the bottle is empty. Along with friend and fellow winemaker Michael Downer, Steve Crawford was also awarded the Young Gun of Wine-Winemaker’s Choice award in 2015. His fresh take on lighter style Barossan reds is often attributed to his unusually early picking.
