Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses 2011The reds are charming and smooth. Their aromas are fresh (black and red currant) subsequently developing notes of undergrowth. The Pernand can be served after 3 years. Serve at around 15°C. It goes well with beef tenderloin, veal sauté, lamb shoulder "laquée, duck fricassée façon coq, and, to round off the meal, a selection of delicious cheeses.-

Domaine de la Pousse d'Or "Clos des 60 Ouvrees" 1er Volnay Monopole 2014Here too a subtle touch of wood sets off the notably ripe and highly spiced aromas of plum, violet and gentle earth scents. There is a wonderfully refined and ultra-pure mouth feel to the well-delineated and concentrated middle weight flavors that are almost pungently stony, all wrapped in an intense and focused yet lacy finale that exhibits just a hint of youthful austerity. This is positively gorgeous and shows absolutely no ill effects from the hail....

Riper on the nose than the Symphonie but with a musky, reduced quality to the aromas of dark plum, raspberry and menthol. The dark fruit flavors suggest a later harvest here but Jean-Luc Burguet nevertheless described the raw material as "just short of full maturity." Flavors of black cherry, dark plum, menthol and minerals are juicy and tight but carry well on the firmly tannic back end. Avoids the slight dry edge sho...

Littorai Les Larmes Pinot Noir 2018Anderson Valley blend of vineyards – the pressed wines from any of the vineyard designated under Littorai, or new vineyards. Does have some conventional farming sources, potentially, in the wine, as a departure from the organic/biodynamic ethos of all other vineyards. A judicious blend to put into bottle earlier, and to drink therefore earlier.-

Pinot Noir is a red grape that is one of the most challenging to grow in any part of the world. Due to its thin skin and tight bunches, it is susceptible to both mould and disease. However, when it is successful, it produces some of the most amazing wines in the world. Although its home is Burgundy, it has emerged as a popular variety in Australia. Representing only 1% of grapes crushed, it has built a high profile with a number of world-class, distinctly Australian wines being produced. The greatest examples coming from the cool climates of the Adelaide Hills, Tasmania, Mornington Peninsula, Geelong and the Yarra Valley.
Pinot Noir performs well on the deepish limestone based subsoils that are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. However, yields need to be kept in check. Pinot Noir's concentration and varietal characters disappear rapidly if yields are excessive. Some of the best and most expensive wines in the world are still found in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir also plays a key role in Champagne, being blended with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. In the US, Oregon and Washington state are producing outstanding wines. In New Zealand, great Pinot Noirs are crafted in Martinborough and in Central Otago, New Zealand's only true continental climate.
The thin skins of Pinot Noir mean the wines are lighter in colour, body and tannins. However, the best wines have grippy tannins, fragrance and an intensity of fruit seldom found in wine from other grapes. Young Pinot Noir can smell almost sweet, but as it matures, the best wines develop a sensuous, silky mouthfeel with the fruit flavours deepening and gamey nuances emerging.
