Cabernet Blend

Winemakers often blend Cabernet Sauvignon with other grape varietals (such as Merlot and Shiraz) as it enhances complexity within the wine whilst giving the fruitier varieties a framework and structure to sit within. The addition of other grapes to Cabernet tends to soften out the harsher tannins. Cabernet blends from Coonawarra, Margaret River and Langhorne Creek are the most commonly known in Australia with Bordeaux and Languedoc the most iconic regions in France for making Cabernet blends.

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots 2015
Thierry oppines that he harvested his holdings in Santenots (planted in 1966) just a few days later than he might have liked to, and it is his only wine which shows less than pitch-perfect ripeness. The result is a rich, opulent and decidedly gourmand rendition of this sometimes firm and four-square terroir, introduced by a bouquet of ripe black cherry, cassis and graphite, framed by ripe, supple tannins. The 2013 “The Malleea” is a dark magenta colour, with a bright purple hue. Lush mulberry, black currant, blackberry and vanillin oak on the nose. The layered palate is of cassis, plum fruit and spice with undertones of mint. Fine structured tannins and subtle oak enhance the finish.

Vignalta Gemola Colli Euganei Rosso 2009
A Premier Cru Classé Pomerol from the Veneto? It may sound strange, but that is exactly what the folks from Vignalta had in mind when they set out to make their top wine, the Gemola. A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, aged in French and American barriques (a mix of oldish and new), this wine is anything but typical. The Gemola is madewith plenty of grip and complexity to make it practically irresistible even for staunch traditionalists. In truth, bot...

Like Armailhac, this Pauillac is made by the Mouton Rothschild team. Always a serious wine, it has been much improved in recent vintages. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenere in 2018. Deep colour with a plush, ripe nose of milk chocolate and ripe black cherry. The palate is spicy and toasty, with heady, ripe cassis at the core that gives an opulent, generous mouthfeel. It's a sexy, pleasure-bent beauty that still has class and impeccable balance. Tasted twice. - Jeb Dunnuck

This wine is resolved, yet fresh and ready. Soft for a Latour, it shows earth, tobacco leaf, liquid pencil, red fruit and a certain youthful creaminess from less acidity than usual.
