Sonoma Valley is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the southeastern part of Sonoma County, California, in the US. Thi… s area has a rich history with California wine; it was home to some of the state’s first grapevines, when Spanish missionaries planted them along the coast here in the 1820s. Two mountain ranges border the AVA: the Mayacamas Mountains to the east and the Sonoma Mountains to the west. Together, these provide the vineyards with some protection from cool Pacific Ocean breezes.
