Meet the Maker

We work closely with some of the greatest winemakers in the world and love having them over. When one of our favourite winemakers is in town, we'll often twist their arm and see if we can't convince them to sit down with some of our friends to drink some wine and tell some stories. It's never too hard. Our 'Meet the Maker' Tastings are rare opportunities to have a relaxed chat with some living legends and come away with a new appreciation for their craft.

It's not every day you see a winery hit its quarter-century, but on Wednesday the 17th of June, you'll get to celebrate this special occasion with one of our favourite wineries, Bannockburn Vineyards. 25 kilometres northwest of Geelong along the Midland Highway, the Bannockburn Vineyards estate is located in the Moorabool Valley sub-region, just outside the township of Bannockburn. Since 1995, this estate has been creating exceptional wines built for ageing. At this special tasting, we will taste back through time, and celebrate 25 years of this Estate with wines from several different older vintages, as well as some younger ones. Matt Holmes commenced making the wines at Bannockburn Vineyards in 2015. He sees his role as a servant to the vineyard, growing season and fruit to produce wines representative of style and site. Above all, gentle inputs and minimal additions are his goal. In his words, “Well-nourished vines grown in a suitable spot, picked on the right day, transcribed as wine.” Previously, Matt had been making wine in the Okanagan wine region of British Columbia, Canada. During these 10 years he also gained a broad range of experience working additional vintages in the U.S., France, Italy, New Zealand as well as Australia.

On Tuesday the 20th of August, United Cellars and Otto Ristorante on Cowper Wharf in Sydney will host a very special dinner. Ashton Hills is a three hectare, dry-grown vineyard that lies in the Piccadilly Valley sub region of the Adelaide Hills on a ridge just below the summit of Mount Lofty. The estate was founded by Stephen George in 1982 and since that time it has built a reputation as one of Australia’s finest proponents of Pinot Noir and cool climate whites. At this event we have the great pleasure to host Stephen for the FIRST EVENT HE HAS EVER HELD IN SYDNEY. That's right, despite almost 40 years of winemaking, Stephen has never shown his wines in Sydney. Despite his reclusive behaviour, his wines have developed a life of their own, and a following that many other more vocal winemakers would kill for. “[Ashton Hills] is the most distinguished site in South Australia for Pinot Noir; Stephen’s unremitting attention to detail has made Ashton Hills the one Grand Cru of the state.” – James Halliday Seats are limited to only 15, as Stephen has requested a small, intimate event for his first ever wine tasting, so get in quick to secure your seats.

Their exacting viticulture ensures the production of grapes of excellent quality and they have created a stable of fine wines distinguished by their consistency over each vintage and their ability to age superbly. The Moss Wood and Mugford names are synonymous with uncompromising quality. Perhaps best known for outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon as well as producing a range of other varietals suited to their particular vineyard’s terroir and philosophy. Moss Wood are one of the best known producers in the esteemed Margaret River. First planted in 1969, Moss Wood is one of the 'Founding Five' vineyards of this isolated Western Australian wine region that is often associated with exceptional quality wines due to its near-perfect climactic conditions. Clare & Keith Mugford, as winemakers, viticulturalists & proprietors, have been making wine & tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since 1984 & 1979, respectively. Their two sons Hugh and Tristan have been assisting their parents since they were young, and are now taking up the reigns. Here at United Cellars we are very pleased to host both Hugh and Tristan for one tasting where they will talk us through their range of Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blends, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and of course Cabernet Sauvignon.

This month in the United Cellars tasting room, we'll have the great honour of welcoming Larry McKenna for our 'Meet the Maker' series. Larry has been referred to by various wine writers and authorities as everything from the ‘Prince of Pinot’ to the ‘Godfather of Pinot Noir’. When he was inducted into the New Zealand Wine Hall of Fame in 2014, he was acknowledged as the winemaker who introduced New Zealand to quality Pinot Noir. In doing so, this helped Martinborough become known as Pinot Noir country. Larry started Martinborough Vineyards, the first winery in Martinborough, in 1986. In 1999 he moved down the road to establish Escarpment, now considered one of New Zealand's premier wineries. In this masterclass, Larry will take us through his range, including a few back vintages, to prove why he holds the title of New Zealand's 'Prince of Pinot'.

First things first, our guest on Wednesday the 22nd of April is not actually the winemaker, but instead the importer of the wonderful wines of Boutique Grower Champagne Egly-Ouriet. Robert Walters was one of the first to explore the Grower Champagne movement, & Egly-Ouriet was there with him from the embryonic start. Nobody in Australia knows these wines better, & it will be a pleasure to taste his wines & pick his brain about this cult producer. "Needless to say that Egly-Ouriet’s Blanc de Noirs remain outstanding in their freshness, finesse & complexity. The growing domaine farms 12 hectares, largely in Ambonnay, but also in Verzenay, Vrigny & Bouzy. All the wines are fermented with natural yeasts in barrels. The malolactic fermentation is blocked to maintain the freshness, which is one of the characteristic features in the terroir-driven Egly-Ouriet portfolio. All of the wines are bottled unfiltered (“since 20 years”) & disgorged after four to six years as Brut or as Extra Brut. (Note that this is only a question of declaration rather than analysis, since also the bruts are dosed with only two or three grams per liter.)" STEPHAN REINHARDT vinous.com At this event we will dig deep into the past, present & future of this cult producer to see how these highly applauded & sought after wines are produced. Seats are limited to only 15, as Robert has requested a small, intimate event for this wine tasting, so get in quick to secure your seats.

For over a century the Mills family has farmed a small patch of earth on the banks of Lake Wanaka, right in the northern-most section of Central Otago, New Zealand. Nick Mills is the fourth generation of his family to walk the rows of Rippon. He and his family now farm the site according to biodynamic principals, and his wines have well and truly achieved cult status, selling out within hours every year. "Mills’s wines from one of the most dramatically-sited, cool climate vineyards in the world, are consistently the most evocative of any that I have come across from New Zealand..." - Joshua Greene (Wine & Spirits) We are so pleased to host Nick for one evening tasting of his wines. If you already know Rippon, you'll know how much of a rare treat this will be, and for those looking to dig deeper into their passion for Pinot Noir, this is a chance to meet one of the most revered producers of this fickle variety. Either way make sure not to miss this rare event!

    The Gidley
On Wednesday the 13th of May, United Cellars will host a dinner with one of the world's great wineries. Cheval Blanc was able to realise its greatest dream in the 1880s, when it began to be considered on a par with the first growths of the Médoc – & one of the most dependably fine wines in the world – by the wine trade & connoisseurs. Thus, in the latter half of the 19th century, Cheval Blanc was in the same price bracket as Margaux, Latour, Lafite, & Haut-Brion in Paris & London auction houses. The wine’s reputation earned it a place at prestigious meals, major receptions, & state dinners. Pierre-Olivier Clouet who is the technical director for Cheval Blanc, Quinault l’Enclos & Cheval des Andes, & will talk us through each of these esteemed estates. Dinner will be held at The Gidley, The Norfolk Room, their private dining space, can be found hidden at the back of The Gidley. This private space is the perfect environment in which to enjoy some of the best wines in the world, matched to world-class fare. Wines shown on the night; 2016 LE PETIT CHEVAL Bordeaux Blanc, 2016 CHEVAL DES ANDES, Mendoza Argentina, 2016, 2015 CHATEAU QUINAULT L'ENCLOS, Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion, 2014, 2010 LE PETIT CHEVAL, 2nd Label of Ch. Nebbiolo has proven itself over the past few years as one of the most intriguing and beguiling grape varieties available. Often referred to as Italy's Burgundy, the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco (as well as several cheaper wines from the surrounding hillsides!) have captured the globe's attention, creating a fascination, and in some cases obsession very similar to those who label themselves "Pinotphiles". At this event we will be talking and tasting through what all the fuss is about. We have a container of wine arriving from Italy full to the brim with Italian Nebbiolo of all flavours, qualities and price points, however we'll also rope in several local friends to show us how they have also been bitten by the Nebbiolo bug and what it looks like through a New World lens. Our host for the evening will be a man who has done all the hard work and study to attain the coveted Master of Wine title, Mr Alistair Cooper MW. Alistair is visiting from England, and has a borderline obsession with Nebbiolo, so is the perfect person to go deep into what makes this variety so very special.
