Locations
Slovenia
Slovenia has a rich winemaking history. With its landscape of rolling hills and continental climate, this central European neighbour of Italy boasts more than 28,000 grape growers across three main wine regions: Podravska on the Drava River, Posavska on the Sava River, and coastal Primorska. In Podravska, Laški Rizling (Welschriesling) and Šipon (Furmint) are important white-grape varieties, among others. Posavska, the smallest of the three regions, produces a number of interesting blends – from many of the same varieties, you’ll find in Podravska. Primorska has a reputation for dry, aromatic single-varietal white wines and firm red wines. The Brda district here is known for its Rebula (the Italian variety Ribolla Gialla) white wine as well as Merlot-Cabernet blends. Other important grape varieties for the region include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Refosco, Malvazija, and Sauvignon Blanc. Indeed, approximately three-quarters of Slovenian wine production centres on white wines. What’s more, locals are responsible for almost all wine consumption, with the country exporting only a small amount.
