Editors notes

This too is very reserved and only grudgingly reveals its gorgeously pure, elegant and wafting nose which speaks of violet, lavender, Asian-
style tea, sandalwood and softly spiced dark currant, plum and black raspberry scents. The silky but intense and exquisitely delineated

medium weight flavors possess flat out superb depth on the impressively persistent finish. As it always is at this early stage, the '18 La
Romanée is compact yet marvelously classy. Patience strongly advised, indeed I wouldn't even think of opening a bottle before its 15th
birthday as it's clearly going to require extended cellaring if you wish to enjoy it at its peak. One of the wines of the 2018 vintage.

Critic Scores & reviews

  • Decanter

    97
"Big, bold and intensely coloured, as it usually is, this is a delicious expression of this bijou monopoly Grand Cru of 0.8452ha. Dense, compact and tightly wound, it has layers of bramble, black cherry and liquorice flavours, sweet, spicy, perfumed oak and a backbone of tannin and acidity. Impressive, complex and built for the long haul."
  • Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

    96-98
"The 2018 La Romanée Grand Cru is the most reserved cuvée in the range, unwinding in the glass with notes of cherries, raspberries, dark chocolate, plums and spices that's framed by a nicely integrated bouquet of creamy new oak. It's full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with a deep and multidimensional core that saturates the palate and largely conceals the wine's powdery structuring tannins. Underpinned by a lively spine of acidity and concluding with a long and pungently perfumed finish, this is a very serious La Romanée built for the cellar."

"Dark cherry red. Much the most subtle of the grands crus at this stage, slower to develop and will be bottled a bit later. Scented and gentle with dark-red fruit, such perfect balance between freshness and perfume and come hither. Tiny ripe berries. Sweet-fruited, scented purity, wonderful freshness and perfectly structured by the hidden tannins. Like the bones in the corset. Gorgeous even now. Firm but lifted, dry yet floating. All in tension."

Locations

France

Wine is being produced throughout France and has been done for over 2,500 years with certain Châteaux dating their history back to Roman times, around 6th Century BC. Ranking second in the world in per-capita consumption and first in total production quantity. More so than the overall quantity of wine is the quantity of truly great wines coming out of France makes the nation the envy of wine-making nations worldwide.

Two concepts pivotal to the higher end French wines, in particular, are the idea of 'terroir' and the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system. Terroir refers to the way the geography, geology and climate find their way into the glass, telling a story of the origin of the wine. The AOC was set up in 1935 and has the primary goal of protecting the authenticity of the wines and the livelihoods of the producers. Appellation rules strictly define which varieties of grapes and winemaking practices are approved for classification in each of France's several hundred geographically defined appellations, which can cover entire regions, individual villages or in some cases, like in Burgundy even specific vineyards.

Classic wine regions in France include Champagne (home of Champagne), Burgundy (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay), Bordeaux (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot), Alsace (Aromatic varietals), Loire Valley (Chenin Blanc, Crémant) and the Rhône Valley (Syrah, Grenache Mourvedre)

The Bordeaux classification of 1855 is still in use, as is the Sauternes and Barsac Classification of the same year. Wines from certain regions can be bought En Primeur, which is when the wine is sold prior to it being bottled.

Burgundy

Burgundy is undoubtedly the home of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnays in the world, where vineyards, or Domaines have been producing wines for over 2000 years. Burgundy is located in the North-east of France, an hours drive from Lyon and 2 hours from Paris. With over 100 appellations, or sub-regions (more than any other wine region) Burgundy is known for being the most terroir-oriented region in the World. The finest red wines of Burgundy are found in the Côte d'Or, a string of villages including Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey St Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St Georges.

There are flavours present in great Burgundys that are the envy of Pinot Noir producers worldwide. The elusive peacocks tail finish that goes on and on, and the pretty-elegance backed by Burgundy muscle is the goal of winemakers around the globe. The main levels in the Burgundy classifications, in descending order of quality, are: Grand crus, Premier crus, village appellations, and finally regional appellations. For the Chablis wines, a similar hierarchy of Grand Cru, Premier Cru and Village wines is used, plus Petit Chablis as a level below Village Chablis.

Vosne-Romanee

Vosne-Romanée is one of the key villages of the Côtes de Nuits in Burgundy, France. Here, amid exceptional growing conditions, you’ll find such famed appellations d'origine contrôlées (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyards as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and La Romanée, which produce some of the most sought-after Pinot Noirs in the world. These renowned wines offer up aromas and flavours of earth, minerality, and smoke alongside ripe red-fruit notes and sometimes dark fruit with spices. With age, aromatics develop into notes of brandied cherries, preserved fruits, leather, and game. Styles range from light- to medium-bodied, with a velvety palate. Costs can run the gamut as well, from delicious and affordable village-level wines to rare and expensive Grand Cru wines.

About the brand Domaine du Comte Liger Belair

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair may be seen as a recent domaine as it was established only in the year 2000 by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. However, in reality, Louis-Michel is just renewing two hundred years of family tradition dedicated to the vines and wines of Burgundy. The Domaine currently applies the principles of ‘lutte raisonnée’ or sustainable agriculture, tending towards organic farming, notably for the end of year treatments. Louis-Michel believes that once the grapes are put on the sorting table at the entry to the winery, 95 percent of the work has been done. The remaining five percent is not a recipe but the application of certain basic principles, a dose of intuition, and an understanding of each vintage.
