This wine is now produced from the grapes off 2 vineyard plantings of younger Riesling. Most of the fruit from the vineyard planted in 2000 and the remainder from 20 rows we planted in 2014. We still see a stylistic difference between the juice of the original blocks of fruit we planted in 1975. Therefore we will continue to make the ‘young vines riesling’, now identifiable to so many of our clients.
Delicious orange citrus notes and a stone-like mineral element are a terrific introduction here. These qualities proceed to the palate, together with bright, red apple and a powdery talc note. The palate is crisp and clean, while maintaining the rounded quality of white stone fruit, coupled with chalky texture and a clean, bright line of acidity. A mouth-watering, lingering finish completes the drinkability factor here.

95"RED STAR VALUE RATED A combination of crushed and whole-bunch fruit, neutral yeast, fermentation in stainless steel, 3 months on lees prior to racking and blending. Not fined. So youthful, so fresh in a squeezed juice kind of way. Lemon jelly crystals, lemon drop, grapefruit pith, orange peel, lime blossom, in scent and on the palate. Nice texture in building phase. But, as usual, the co-star with equal billing in this production is the crunchy, tangy acidity."

Citrus oil, apple juice concentrate, faintest honeyed character, a sluice of saline minerality. Powerful, amazing white wine here. A flowery, talcy, typical young riesling bouquet, the palate showing rich fruit backed by a judicious tickle of sweetness, nicely balanced by acid and grip, which firms up and cleanses the finish. Good length. Food is in order here. It will also take some age to advantage."

Australia's wine regions are scattered across the south and southeast, with almost every state boasting its own vineyards. Victoria, for example, is home to an impressive 21 wine regions. Some of the most famous wine regions in Australia include Margaret River, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley, and local regions to New South Wales such as Cowra, Southern Highlands, and Mudgee.

Victoria
The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grapevines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well-known regions such as Yarra Valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for its outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.
There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
Henty
The Henty wine region was previously (if only unofficially) known as either 'Drumborg' or 'Far South-west Victoria' before being named after Edward Henty, the first permanent settler in Victoria. It's located some 300km west of Melbourne and 500km south east of Adelaide.
The first to see the potential in the region for wine was Karl Seppelt, who identified Keppoch (now called Padthaway) and Drumborg to be cool-climate sites with significant potential.
The climate in Henty is among the coolest in Australia and can be difficult to get grapes to ripen in the coldest of seasons. Grapes in the region ripen later than in most other viticultural areas in Australia, resulting in superb intense varietal flavours. The wines can have marvellous intensity, elegance and finesse.
About the brand Crawford River
Crawford River wines has been family owned and operated since 1975, crafting wines exclusively from selected, hand-picked fruit grown in their estate vineyard. And it’s not just the fruit that comes directly from their estate, every wine is also vinified and bottled on site too. The fruit is brought to the winery in small parcels, where meticulous attention is paid to every tiniest detail. Patience and time are of the essence in this winery. The team at Crawford River believes in minimal interference and movement during vinification, preferring the fruit to naturally express their special terroir. It is their belief that this approach influences the pure and elegant qualities found in their wines. Since 2005 there has been a happy confluence of young and old at Crawford River wines. While professionally trained and with numerous international vintages under her belt, Belinda knows there is no substitute for John´s 35+ years of experience in the Estate vineyard he created.
The Crawford River vineyard lies at the alluvial edge of a volcanic lava flow. The 11.5 Ha vineyard has its roots in an unusually complex, mineral-rich soil base. Gravelly, friable, basalt loam overlays permeable clay which in turn lies above a limestone base created by an ancient, risen seabed. Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon are the two main varieties in the vineyard, with smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. And with care comes quality; all major activities such as picking, pruning, leaf-plucking, shoot-thinning and green pruning are done lovingly by hand. Well done Crawford River crew!
