This Third Growth Grand Cru Classé producer is situated in Haut-Médoc, on the site of ‘The Village de La Lagune’ built there in 1525. The wines typically focus on freshness, elegance and aromatics. They will cellar very well but have a welcoming approachability in their youth. 2021 is beautifully ripe, balanced and fresh. A fantastic example of Haut-Medoc wines.

The estate had just been bought the year before by the Freys, taking over from René Chayou, owner of Ayala Champagne - although Caroline Frey arrived a few years later. Significantly higher Merlot than in today's La Lagune, and planted on the gravel outcrops that the Freys quickly replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon. At 21 years old this still has elegance, but it is soft on the finish, and a little underpowered. The emphasis is on tobacco and soft raspberry notes, touches of smoke that are a signature of the estate, and it is extremely drinkable. Audience award in the masterclass along with the 2016 vintage. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot. Cask sample. Pretty nose with what appears to be a good concentration of fruit. Pure and precise on the palate, the tannins smooth and rounded. Compact and harmonious with adequate mid-palate fruit and length on the finish. Bravo. (JL)
