Made from Australias first Assyrtiko vines. Opens with lifted floral aromatics, followed by notes of pear and lime. Great concentration of flavour to open, with stone like minerality running the length of the palate. A refreshing line of acidity gives the wine a lively feel, finishing with a fine chalky texture. Super refreshing, the perfect match for fresh Australian seafood.
“I first tasted Assyrtiko in August 2006 while on holiday with my wife Sue on the Greek island of Santorini, birthplace of the Assyrtiko grape variety. The crisp, acidic qualities reminded me of our Clare Valley Rieslings and yet it was a flavour I had not experienced before. Intrigued with this newfound variety, I began the process of importing cuttings into Australia through quarantine. In August 2012 we planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko at our Lodge Hill Vineyard, a special and unique site treasured by my family and suited to this variety. Our Assyrtiko journey has been fascinating and has enabled us to produce a wine which, I believe, is a true expression of the variety. Australia's wine industry is a thriving part of the country's economy, contributing significantly to employment, production, export, and tourism. In fact, the industry is the fourth-largest wine exporter in the world, shipping out 760 million liters of wine to countries including France, Italy, Spain, and the UK. One of the key factors contributing to Australia's success as a "New World" wine producer is the formal export and marketing of its wines through Wine Australia.
Australia's wine regions are scattered across the south and southeast, with almost every state boasting its own vineyards. Victoria, for example, is home to an impressive 21 wine regions. Some of the most famous wine regions in Australia include Margaret River, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley, and local regions to New South Wales such as Cowra, Southern Highlands, and Mudgee.
Australian winemakers are known for producing a diverse range of grape varieties, with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir being among the most popular. They tend to focus on producing wines that are ripe, fruit-forward, and easy to drink, using modern winemaking techniques and equipment such as stainless steel tanks and temperature-controlled fermentation.

South Australia
If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the country's vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.
Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!
Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
Clare Valley
Situated in the Mid North of South Australia, approximately 120 km north of Adelaide is one of Australia's oldest wine regions the Clare Valley. The area is broken up into three sub-regions, the Polish Hill River region to the east, the Central Clare Valley, and the Skillogalee Valley to the west.
Often associated with some of Australia's finest Riesling the cool climate and differing terroirs have paved the way for exciting and diverse wines over a plethora of varietals resulting in wines of pure expression and great length. Home to some of Australia's most iconic wineries - cult producers like Wendouree, to Australian icons such as Kilikanoon and boutique producers like Atlas, the Clare Valley is definitely an area to keep an eye on for exciting and ever-evolving wines.
About the brand Jim Barry Wines
Jim Barry Wines is an inaugural member of Australia's First Families of Wine. Founded back in 1959 by Jim and his wife Nancy, the winery has a great track record for producing high-quality wines particular in the realm of Riesling where the two helped establish the Clare Valley as a benchmark for the variety.
Jim Barry was the first qualified winemaker in the region having graduated as only the 17th student to gain a Degree in Oenology at the prestigious Roseworthy Agricultural College back in 1947. Having worked for 2 decades at the Clarevale Co-operative, he then went on to establish Taylors Wines in 1969.
10ha of vineyards throughout the subregion of Armagh and the greater Clare Valley are key to the longevity of Jim Barry wines. The terroir of Clare Valley with its night-time temperature-drops & limestone soils makes for great Riesling and provides the necessary acid and structure to assist long-term cellaring of the reds.
Although Jim Barry passed away in 2004, the winery is in good hands with the family still very much a part of the operation. His philosophy was to make wines that are both enjoyable on release and reward long term cellaring and he was posthumously given the 'Legends Hall of Fame' award in 2014. Jim's sons Peter, Mark & John all play a part and now 3rd generation Tom (Gourmet Traveller's 'Young Winemaker of the Year 2014) and Sam work as winemaker and commercial manager for Jim Barry Wines.
