New South Wales

New South Wales, is a wine-lover's paradise with 14 official wine regions that cater to every palate. The region boasts Australia's oldest wine-producing area, the Hunter Valley, as well as newer and exciting cool climate regions like Orange, the Southern Highlands, and Tumbarumba. With its status as the second-largest wine-producing state in Australia, New South Wales attracts wine enthusiasts from around the world. However, despite its production, the region's wine consumption far outpaces its output due to its high population.

In addition to its diverse range of wine regions, New South Wales is also known for its excellent food and wine events. The Hunter Valley, for example, is home to the famous Hunter Valley Food and Wine Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors each year. The festival features tastings, cooking demonstrations, live music, and other activities that showcase the region's local produce and wines.

Hunter Valley

Hunter Valley is one of Australia's most famous wine regions and is internationally recognized alongside Barossa Valley in South Australia. The climate in Hunter Valley is characterized by regular droughts or floods, which may seem less than ideal for grape cultivation due to the hot, humid summers and cool winters. However, the region has been under cultivation since the 1800s and is renowned for its production of Australian wine, especially Semillon and to a lesser extent, Shiraz.

The success of Hunter Valley's wines can be attributed to the dedication and innovation of its winemakers, including industry pioneers such as Bruce Tyrrell and Len Evans, who helped to establish the region's reputation worldwide. The region's famous Semillon grape, once known as "Hunter Valley Riesling," is never matured in oak but is instead left to age in bottles. This wine is one of the most ageworthy whites in the country, exhibiting an impressive ability to age gracefully. Aged Semillons can exhibit burnt toast and honey notes, nutty flavors, and supremely complex palates. The soft acidity of the wine is well-balanced, and the finish can be incredibly long.

About the brand Krinklewood

Rod and Suzanne Windrim planted their first vines on their first Hunter Valley property in 1981. By 1997 they moved to a picturesque property in Broke Fordwich and planted a much larger 48 acre vineyard. After completing courses in wine processing and viticulture at Kurri Kurri Tafe, (and later attendees at a Rudolph Steiner Agriculture course) proved to be hugely influential and impacted immediately on Rod and Suzanne’s overall approach to viticulture and farming. By early 2002, the vineyard was fully committed to Biodynamics and saw the vineyard managed completely organically and biodynamically (Krinklewood Vineyard becoming fully certified biodynamic by 2007).

This family owned boutique Hunter Valley winery and vineyard involves every member of the family contributing significantly. Together with their great team of vineyard and cellar door staff, the entire team are committed and ‘hands on’ in the daily biodynamic operations of the vineyard. The vineyard itself is located in the southern end of the Broke Fordwich Valley and has a slightly cooler climate than most of the Hunter Valley wineries. Every aspect of this vineyard is managed in a holistic and sustainable way, without the use of any chemicals. As for the wines, the white vines were planted in 1998 are located on a flat bed of free-draining loam organic soil which is ideal for producing classic Hunter Valley Semillon, Verdelho and Chardonnay. In more recent years they have added to the whites with small plantings of Gerwurztraminer and Viognier.

The red vines where planted in 1998 and are situated on a gentle slope of clay-loam organic soil which is well suited to classic Hunter Shiraz. Later, the vineyard planted Mourvedre to make their Francesca Rosé and even a small planting of the Spanish variety Tempranillo.
