Tasmania's Apsley Gorge is a world apart. The location is unique, the vineyard snuggled as it is under the Douglas Apsley National Park at the northern end of the East Coast. It is a cool location, extending the ripening season and making it among the last to pick in the state. Brian Franklin has honed his experience in both hemispheres - he produces wine in both France and Tasmania.
Wafts of game and earth, in typical Apsley G style, which give way to brambly fruit, white pepper and violets. The fruit is powerful but precise and focused. Richly textured in the mouth with ripe fruit, dark chocolate, slate and a fine, chalky structural line. Savoury and dry on the finish. A really excellent release to follow on from the fabulous 2014.

Australia's wine industry is a thriving part of the country's economy, contributing significantly to employment, production, export, and tourism. Australia's wine regions are scattered across the south and southeast, with almost every state boasting its own vineyards. Victoria, for example, is home to an impressive 21 wine regions. Tasmania
Apart from being the most southerly wine region in Australia, Tasmania has among the coolest growing subregions with the potential to make distinctly different wines than in the rest of the country.
Most well known for cool-climate varietals like Pinot noir and Chardonnay (thus sparkling too), Sauvignon Blanc smaller plantings of Riesling, Cabernet and Pinot Gris (more commonly Pinot labelled Pinot Grigio)
Historically, Tasmania can lay claim to being the founder of both the Victorian and South Australian wine industries as William Henty sailed from Launceston to Portland (in Victoria) in 1834 and planted grape cuttings there. Though not conclusively proven, it's believed that John Hack planted vines in South Australia in 1837, closely followed in 1838 by John Reynell.
Warmer vintages (possibly attributable to global warming) has had positive effects on region's industry, allowing grapes in recent vintages to achieve full phenolic ripeness, making for vibrant wines that have been widely accepted as world class.
About the brand Apsley Gorge
Established in 1988 this tiny vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir (5.5ha) and Chardonnay (1ha) and is located several kilometres inland from the coast near the entrance to the Apsley Gorge national Park north-west of Bicheno. The vineyards unique situation near the entry to the gorge brings breezes in the afternoon which have a distinct cooling effect which means this vineyard is typically one of the last to harvest in Tasmania with harvest usually being around the first week of May. This micro-climate is unique for the east coast.
Since 1999 winemaking has been undertaken by owner Brian Franklin who also does vintage each year in Burgundy with Philippe Charlopin (himself mentored by his friend Henri Jayer) in Gevrey Chambertin, and is helped here in Tasmania by young French winemakers including Philippe Charlopin’s son Yann. Including vintages undertaken in France Brian now has almost 40 vintages of winemaking experience in both France and Australia.
