Shaw + Smith own two vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, at Balhannah and Lenswood, totalling 55 hectares. The vineyards are planted to varieties that perform particularly well in the region, namely Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah. Balhannah is also home to the winery where the Tasting Room is open daily. Shaw + Smith’s first vintage was in 1990, and the early vintages were made at Wirra Wirra and Petaluma. In 1999 they purchased a property at Balhannah, where they planted vines, and built the winery and tasting room in time for the 2000 vintage. In 2012 they purchased an established 20 hectare vineyard in Lenswood. As the business has grown Michael and Martin have built a formidable team to continue the evolution of Shaw + Smith, including Master of Wine David LeMire, Senior Winemaker Adam Wadewitz, Business Manager Grant Lovelock and Group Viticulturist Murray Leake.

94"A combination of whole berry and whole bunch, this richly flavoured, mid-weight pinot has spent 15 days on skins, ensuring a skirt of ripe, svelte tannin. These keep scents of bing cherry, raspberry, wood smoke and a carnal whiff of autumnal forest and whole cluster bristle focused and savoury. A spurt of juicy acidity pulls it all far and wide. This is the finest riff on this cuvee tasted in a long time."

93"Medium to full red colour with a good purple tinge. The bouquet is quite strong on stemmy bunchy characters, invoking root vegetables, pepper and dried herbs. The wine is slightly lean and firm in tannin, the structure suggesting it will go well with protein-rich food and also reward some cellaring. It's quite a bunchy style, too, and could benefit from another year in bottle. A very serious pinot."

South Australia
If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the country's vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.
Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!
Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
Adelaide Hills
Famous for their Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir, the viticulture of this region was re-established in 1979 but grapes were planted locally as early as 1839. During the last three decades, Adelaide Hills has emerged as one of Australia’s most exciting cool climate wine region, being known to produce elegant, distinct, sophisticated wines. Located in the Mount Lofty Ranges and only a 30 minute drive from Adelaide, this region is home not only to over 90 wine labels and 48 cellar doors, but also to multiple forests, beef and dairy farms, apple and pear orchards.
Known to be one of the largest geographical wine regions in Australia, the Adelaide Hills are made up of two registered sub regions: Lenswood and Piccadilly Valley. These narrow band of hills stretch across to be approximately 70 km long and 30 km wide and border Barossa and Eden Valleys to the North and McLaren Vale to the South.
The climate of this region is considerably cooler compared to other wine regions in the summer, due to the altitudes of the vineyards being 400-700 meters high. The cooler drier climate produces grapes with ideal fruit composition, creating the perfect balance of flavour and acidity.
About the brand Shaw and Smith
Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith MW after having a long held dream of making wine together. It was identified as a leading producer of Sauvignon Blanc by the time they acquired a 42ha property at Woodside, in the Adelaide Hills region. In 1999, Martin and Michael bought a 36ha property in Balhannah, building the attractive winery in 2000 and planting more Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling.
Shaw + Smith's winery is considered as the benchmark for winery improvements in Adelaide Hills. In 2002, a new bottling line was set up, guaranteeing full control of every aspect of production - from grape berry to bottle.
