Historically, Tasmania can lay claim to being the founder of both the Victorian and South Australian wine industries as William Henty sailed from Launceston to Portland (in Victoria) in 1834 and planted grape cuttings there. Though not conclusively proven, it's believed that John Hack planted vines in South Australia in 1837, closely followed in 1838 by John Reynell.
Warmer vintages (possibly attributable to global warming) has had positive effects on region's industry, allowing grapes in recent vintages to achieve full phenolic ripeness, making for vibrant wines that have been widely accepted as world class.
Pipers River is the northernmost wine-producing region on the island state of Tasmania in Australia. The region enjoys a maritime climate, with plenty of hours of sunshine, moderate temperatures from the breezes off the Bass Strait and from the Pipers River itself, and valley slopes that help protect the grapes from threatening frosts. Soils here are deep, crumbly, and free-draining. This combination of elements provides favourable conditions for late-ripening grape varieties and cool-climate wine production. The primary red-wine variety in Pipers River is Pinot Noir, and the key white varieties are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio. Varietal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines are fresh and elegant, and the region also has a burgeoning reputation for high-quality sparkling wines.
